I'm posting here for traffic really, apologies
I'd like to make a giant knitted blanket -anyone done that? Or knows what I'm talking about?
Where to you get the yarn (or what's it called when it so thick?) and giant knitting needles?
If i look for needles online - what would be the size nr?
Thanks

I knit ponchos, blankets, and cushion covers on needles between 15 and 40mm, using several strands of wool together to make it chunky. By changing some of the strands at random you can get some lovely effects, and it is much cheaper than buying posh thick wool.
I got the needles online and they weren't very expensive at all.

PomBear, I like the entrelac especially. I mix normal weight yarns in that way - changing one strand now and then to get new colour blends - but with the huge needles don't you get aching arms and shoulders ? I think I'd be out for the count after casting on !

Pom and Yank those are amazing.

I did that green poncho on 20mm needles. It still only had 49 stitches to the row, to go round me like a marquee Grin ( The original pattern has 35) and it took longer to do the finishing ( neck band and fringing) than it did to knit.
It's surprising how quickly stuff knits, even without the extreme massive needles.

I know I'm reviving an old thread but I wanted to show off my latest project. (Please ignore the mess in the background, I'm also sorting the camping gear out)

My sister does giant knitting. She couldn't afford the larger knitting needles so bought a broom handled and let her son loose with a swiss army knife. A bit of sanding the rough edges off the points and she had two cheap large needles

Place marking, I'm interested.

There are loads of places online that sell cheap acrylic double knitting wool. I'd order a few balls in co-ordinating colours and big bamboo needles. Then double or treble up the wool, depending on the needles. Knit large squares, mix up the colours. You could do easy stocking stitch or moss stitch. Then sew them up and knit a contrasting border to sew round.

If you knit squares it's not a huge deal if you go wrong. You don't have weeks worth of knitting to pull out.

I knit a lot, and can do at least one 8 inch square a night in front of the telly. I've knitted loads of blankets and throws this way.
