DP and I love spas, architecture, cocktails, dancing, junk and antique shops, good food...has anyone spent any time in Budapest and can recommend where we might like to spend some time for a long weekend on his birthday?

Memento Park is my favourite place in Budapest!

I see others have already said the Szchenyi baths, one of my most favourite places ever, we also went twice in 5 days and I slept like a dead woman afterwards, I was so chilled out I could barely walk back to our apartment. I would also recommend the nearby restaurant Bagolyvar, its super cheap and owned by the fancy Gellert restaurant next door, the food is Hungarian and very good.. The only other restaurant I remember was the worryingly named Fatal, go very hungry, the portions were monumental. And the House if Terror museum is fascinating, but I got the monumental creeps in the basement and virtually sprinted out of the building, only to find one of my travelling companions white faced and shaking on the pavement outside! I've never felt an atmosphere like it, and I am not remotely woo at all! Anyway, Budapest is fab, you'll love it. The language is ridiculous though, we couldn't even master please and thank you. I'm so jealous, I live in Oz now, who knows if I'll ever get back to Budapest!

I'm Hungarian and born in Budapest!

Margaret Island is lovely, I haven't been since 2010 but if the Japanese garden is still there it's a sweet spot to just sit and be still.

The Castle District is well worth a visit, there's nothing like being there when it's dark and looking down onto the city!

One word of advice - if you go on public transport watch your purse etc like a hawk, don't put mobiles etc in back pockets, always have your bag in front of you.
Pickpockets are very skilled, work in groups & can totally ruin your day/hoilday!

The Gellert baths are wonderful.

You must go to Memento Park, it's an amazing open air collection of Communist statues. I think there's one or two buses a week that take you there from the centre. It's amazing. Not many people have heard of it

It is astonishing. Ginormous really bad statues.

Jumping on the thread - we're going to Budapest in April, possibly over Easter weekend. Will lots of stuff be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday/Monday, or will that not really be an issue? Tips here have been great. I'm making notes!
