My 10 yr old DD loves to go to gymnastics. She goes for 2.5 hours once a week .Last night I went to pick her up and I could see right away something was wrong becuase she was slumped looked dazed and grey .One of the coaches said she had landed badly and 'shocked herself' 'She could not put any weight on het foot and I had to help her out of the room and could see see she was shakey as soon as she got outside she vomited in the car park..I took her straight to A&E and she had fractured her ankle and 2 bones in her foot. This had happened 45 minutes into a 2.5 hour class and she had just been ignored. No first aid , no ice , no attempt to ring parents. Now I know it is a dangerous sport and there are intrinsic risks. That's fine. What isn't fine is that because3 she wasn't screaming and crying she was left in pain for nearly 2 hours.

What type of "more than a complaint" did you have in mind?

Festivecheer26 · 05/01/2017 11:28

But the OP's child did not land on their head or neck. They have a fractured ankle.

GeekLove · 05/01/2017 11:36

I think that the OP means that the club ensures that the person(s) responsible for the lapse in safeguarding have to (re)-train in First Aid and safeguarding or else be expelled from the club. That and the fact I would require a paper trail and proof that such action was undertaken.
The OP's daughter fractured her ankle, but what if such an incident was to recur?

Firstly, I hope your DD is ok.

I would go to the club, tell them your concerns and ask for sight of their injury protocol and accident records. If they have one, check if you think the protocol is satisfactory (it should list detailed steps) then question why they didn't follow it. Check that they recorded the accident and injury in detail. This is a basic H&S requirement. Ask also, whether a first aider dealt with the accident and what they did to check the severity of the injury.

If they don't have these they have no business running a gymnastics club, and don't send your daughter there again.

Either way you should report them to the school/ local council.

As a first aider in work there should be a log book and a mechanism whereby the patient also has a copy of the record (details of injury, record of treatment, whether this classifies as a Lost Time Injury etc)

It will be somewhat different but this being a fracture is definitely in the same category as a LTI and with the addition gaps in the safeguarding of children which need to be addressed.

I am aware that there is a risk with gymnastics but it seems that their Health and Safety policy has more holes in it than a colander.

Has anyone even just offered the OP and her dd an apology and reassurance?

YouMeanYouForgotCranberriesToo · 05/01/2017 12:15

I assumed it was the coaches who had said the bad landing was 45 mins into the session, not ops dd. My dd goes to gymnastics and if this happened there I wouldn't send her again, I wouldn't trust them to look after her.
I play netball with adults and as soon as it is clear someone isn't bouncing straight back up they get an ice pack and an accident form is filled in. This is the least I'd expect them to do at gymnastics. I can understand not realising it's bad straight away, but if she'd been sat down for 5-10 minutes, with an ice pack and someone with her/checking on her and she still couldn't stand on it then I would expect them to call.

Ohyesiam · 05/01/2017 12:17

ditsyprint how do you mean, investigate first then decide of she needs to complain? What situation would make it ok that the child was not assessed and was left in pain, first aid not given, and parents not contacted?

bumsexatthebingo · 05/01/2017 13:51

I can't believe a coach said they'd left the child sat pale and grey for 90 mins! Maybe it was the dd (who seemed to be in shock) who sad about it being 45 mins into the lesson. I think some of these posts are a bit much without knowing the facts. And the op hasn't been back to clarify. What if it happened 10 mins before the session finished and the coaches new the op was on her way?
