DH has a terrible cough. Chesty I think and apparently phlegmy. He's driving me up the wall with it and ended up on the sofa last night.
In the past I've tried benelyn and covonia etc but nothing seems to actually work.
Please help before I throttle him!

Well he slept better last night! Not sure which did the trick as we tried a combination:
Propped up on pillows
Ibuprofen and strepsils just before bed
Glass of water to sip through the night
It's not productive anymore so I think I'll go for round two at the chemist...

Pulmo Baily, it tastes so bloody awful it scares the cough away Smile

Codeine linctus is the only one that works and stops the endless cough that will strain your stomach muscles. All the ickle fluffy bunny and TV ad ones are just sugared water. If you must buy, get it at wilko not the super expensive place mentioned above.

Pholcodeine is not the same. Codeine is hard to get for obvious reasons but can be bought online from real uk pharmacies. You don't need much. Stock up before the druggies make yet another useful medicine unavailable.

Agree with the other posters saying please dont try and stop a productive cough. This came from a respiratory nurse who came to visit me, on a ward I'd been moved to after spending a night in Resus and consequently then being moved on to HDU. The only advice they gave at the time (other than the cocktail of drugs I'd been put on) was plenty of water to help 'wash' the crap off your lungs easier. My Mum was given the same advice when in hospital by a thoracic consultant.

A chest physio told me they're more than happy with phlegmy patients as it means the gunk is on the move. Not just sitting there and increasing your risks of catching pneumonia.

He sounds like he may need some abs OP. Hope he's better soon. Avoiding dairy is meant to help to as apparently it sticks.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 05/01/2017 12:54

Sorry, not catching pneumonia, developing pneumonia.

Farmmummy · 05/01/2017 13:02

Agree Blythe one dose and you are too scared to cough in case you get another!

TheLionQueen · 07/01/2017 17:24

He's getting worse I think. The coughing is terrible, so frequent and he can't sleep with it neither can i
I dropped him off at the pharmacy as I think he needed to see someone for advice, and they've given him zinc, echinacea and the pholcodine. He's had two doses so far and not much improvement, but early days I guess.

Just had a look bigger thank you for the link but I don't think it is- it's more of a chesty cough than a throaty cough iyswim?
It starts off almost as a tickle but then the cough vibrates his whole chest. He doesn't sound very bunged up but I'll run it past him.
The Ibuprofen seemed to work at first but not any more Sad

Codeine linctus but is really hard to get hold of now as it was being abused.

The pholcodine which is the new (none abusable) version doesn't work aswell imo.

Houseofmirth66 · 07/01/2017 18:30

Cough medicines don't work. They would only 'coat your throat' if you were pouring it down your windpipe and into your lungs.

TheLionQueen · 07/01/2017 18:30

It is unfortunately. I wonder if you might be on to something with the drip though- he says it starts in his throat then sets the chesty bit off.
Will have a read up again and report back in the morning...

J Collis Brownes Mixture contains Morphine in a very small amount which has the same effect as the codeine as they are both opioids. You won't be able to get it in Boots but most independents sell it although you may have to ask due to the abuse reasons as above.

I find bronchoscope helps me but the pastille rather than the cough medicine

Ruhrpott · 07/01/2017 19:36

Broncostop

TheLionQueen · 07/01/2017 20:02

Will see how tonight goes- he's had an antihistamine and just trying to get plenty of fluids/rest.
I think I might get some funny looks asking for that! I do have access to codeine so can try that if it is still bad tomorrow. He needs a good night's sleep for work on Monday! Thanks so much everyone I appreciate the advice Smile

Covonia is pretty good. That's what we use.

MrsMattBomer · 07/01/2017 20:16

Can you still get Night Nurse? It always worked for DS2.

LostSight · 07/01/2017 20:21

I usually take Nytol in the evening if I have a cough. Antihistamine that makes me sleepy seemed a logical choice. I find it helps, but I guess it might not for everyone.

ChristmasFluff · 07/01/2017 20:23

Bit late on the thread I think, but again, if he is bringing up phlegm, then he needs to keep coughing. If he is not bringing up phlegm, then things with codeine may help, but also things like drinking lots of fluids and being in a warm humid environment (hot shower, like croup), and not moving in bed will help. Really, if he moves, he will cough. This is either good if he brings up phlegm (however little) or bad if he doesn't.

TheLionQueen · 07/01/2017 20:34

He's a terrible fidget which can't help matters!
Covonia doesn't seem to touch it unfortunately.
He's decided on codeine for tonight, will look at the sleeping type stuff when we go out tomorrow I think. I don't want him to suppress it too much in the day if he still needs to cough but he just had a bad cough and threw up a bit! It's like a cycle that won't break.

I missed the medical explanation. I normally soldier on through during the day but Medicate before I try and sleep.
