Bin Etiquitte

RedBlu · 03/01/2017 16:31

Due to Christmas and bank holidays, our general waste bin hasn't been emptied for nearly three weeks.

We put our bin out last night for collection this morning as we always do (they tend to collect early) and I have now experienced my first "bin etiquitte" drama!! At some point between last night and this morning someone decided to use the last bit of space in my bin to add a bag of their own, meaning that when I went to add the last bag this morning, there wasn't room!

So I removed the offending bag, and added mine leaving the other bag along side my bin. No idea who did it, but it's general waste so I am not intending on digging around for clues.

However, the bin men won't take extra bags so it's been left. I heard the bin men being quite rude and pointing at various households who had left out extra bags and they simply refused to take them.

I now feel somewhat annoyed that I am left with a random bag of rubbish that isn't mine and whoever it was didn't have the decency to ask if they could add to our bin, they just snuck about like a bin ninja in the night.

Am I right in thinking this is not good bin etiquitte!?

Yabu. Everywhere I've lived it is etiquette to allow others to put extra bags in another bin if space allows, once they are on the street.

Pseudonym99 · 04/01/2017 07:32

Just leave the offending bag on the street. Hopefully it will guilt trip the fly tipping neighbour into putting it into their own bin for the next collection.

allchattedout · 04/01/2017 07:49

Eh? Did they take your actual bin away too? Just put in there. Don't leave it out on the street as it will get ripped open by foxes.

Sundance01 · 04/01/2017 07:51

My bin went missing and I told the council and they dropped another one off. A couple of days later my bin re-appeared. So I have now had two bins for several years.

My neighbours all appreciate having the spare space available to use espicially at Xmas.

I would recommend all groups of neighbours decide to 'lose' a bin and get themselves a spare. There is always more than one way to skin a cat - work together to solve a genuine problem rather than moaning.

On a side note it is one of those small things that really annoys me that local councils do not make extra provision to cope with the extra rubbish generated at Xmas. Its not like its unexpected and most of us do not want all the packaging we are forced to buy along with our goods anyway.

SoupDragon · 04/01/2017 08:17

This is why collections by bag, as happens here, is so much better

Holy crap no! There would be rubbish strewn all down the street due to the thriving urban fox population. A truly dreadful idea!

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2017 08:22

Call the council tell them the bags been left, it's s health hazard due to risk of rats and small children /elderly people being around, you don't know whose it is, and you can't get to tip. I did that once and they came out and collected it. I think the words health hazard scared them.

lornathewizzard · 04/01/2017 08:28

On a positive note our binmen are really good. They have often taken an extra bag for me if I catch them when they're collecting and there were no changes to collections over Christmas, including collecting ours on Boxing Day (sure the binmen didn't really appreciate it, hope they got overtime)

Glastonbury · 04/01/2017 08:45

Our collections stayed the same over Christmas for the first time which was great. Is there a public litter bin you could dump it in nearby? We are still on weekly collections for general rubbish so I would keep it in my bin.

Igneococcus · 04/01/2017 08:46

We now haven't had a general rubbish collection since the 12th December. Our council went to three-weekly collections in November and there should have been one in our area on Monday, 2. January, there were notes in the local paper that there are no changes to the collection dates even if it was a public holiday (like the 2. Jan in Scotland) but there was no sign of the bin lorry all week so far. All the bins along the street are bulging, if the bin men refuse to take them there will be a lot of anger. Supposedly there is a recycling collection today, so there are now even more bins out.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2017 08:53

"Just leave the offending bag on the street. Hopefully it will guilt trip the fly tipping neighbour into putting it into their own bin for the next collection."

It's not likely that the fly tipper has that kind of conscience. It will stay there making a mess. OP could even be fined for it herself.

Floggingmolly · 04/01/2017 08:54

If your bin is now empty; put the extra bag in Hmm. I never get the drama surrounding which recepticle people's rubbish goes into - it's all rubbish to be taken to the dump.
If this means you run out of space before next collection day, use someone else's free space. Stop being territorial about the council's your bin.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2017 08:54

I can't believe how many people think doing this is OK. Someone used to do it to a bin where I used to work. The wheely bin was already heavy so extra bags of heavy newspapers were giving me back pain.

Even worse, imo, than putting rubbish in other people's bins are people who put their dogs' poo bags into random bins outside other people's houses.

I used to see this all the time where I used to live, it's disgusting. It's your dog's poo, put it in your own dustbin.

xStefx · 04/01/2017 12:12

OOps, I do this ... but only if the bins have been put out ready for collection and I assume the neighbours have no more rubbish to dispose of. Although I suppose I know its naughty deep down as I do it in the dark wearing my black coat with my hood up and carry the task out as quick as I can lol

Hidingtonothing · 04/01/2017 12:33

@Sundance01 you get replacements for free?!! Our council charges even if you move into a property and there's no bin or yours gets stolen, they're not cheap either!

Niloufes · 04/01/2017 13:02

Err just put it in the bottom of your bin for two weeks time. What's the problem?

EndoTheWorld · 04/01/2017 13:15

Niloufes The problem is that she will then be one bag over again next time, obviously.

We're supposed to be getting communal bins soon. Some households will use up all the space. I give it a week until someone puts a sofa in one. Hmm

Niloufes · 04/01/2017 13:19

Endo - Not really as its 3 week collection this week but 2 next, so she'll have less.

EndoTheWorld · 04/01/2017 13:24

Oh! Missed that, sorry!

MyKidsHaveTakenMySanity · 04/01/2017 13:44

I've done this. My upstairs neighbour is rarely in and usually has a completely empty bin by collection day. Even KNOWING that he was extremely unlikely to need the space, I still waited until the bin lorry was on the way up the street collecting before filling his bin (gutted my son's room completely just before Santa arrived to refill it!). I would hate to take up space my neighbour needed. It's rude.

Turns out it's not a big deal anyway. My clothes airer recently broke so I popped it by my bin as I have seen many villagers do. Despite having a 7 day a week free tip available, the bin chaps still take stuff from the sides of wheelie bins! How handy. The council allowed us 3 extra black bin bags outside of the bin over Christmas (weekly collections anyway just changed by a day over Christmas) and they even said they would take old Christmas trees.
We're very lucky here methinks.

Bohemond · 04/01/2017 13:51

Every day I thank God for my lovely bin men. We have special ones with a small lorry to get around our lanes. They will take anything and everything (we are good recyclers as well) and have specifically said to leave things by the side if they won't fit in. This might be to do with the £20 Christmas tip Grin

Driving around yesterday most bins had extra bags by the side and all were gone this morning.

Move to Somerset people!

purplefizz26 · 04/01/2017 13:55

Only cheeky bastards put rubbish in other people's bins, whether they are out for collection or not.

I put my bin out the night before collection day. I do this because they turn up at different times, early or late morning, and mornings can be hectic and I might forget.

I do often add a last bag in the morning though before it is collected.

I wouldn't hesitate I remove the bag and see if I could figure out who it belonged to, and plonk it on their doorstep.

piddleypower · 04/01/2017 14:00

In our street people often use up other people's unused bin space. Don't see the problem as long as it is done once the bins have been put out. I seriously would not allow myself to get stressed and territorial about this. If someone was filling my bin right up before bin day I would be a bit annoyed, but an extra bag on bin day is just sensible space sharing! A bit of give and take between neighbours is a nice thing. They weren't to know you had another bag to put in that morning.

When you took the bin bag out you must have known it would be left by the bin men so what did you think would happen to it? I'd just put it in your bin, and then if you are worried about it in future just make sure you put the bins out as late as possible, after emptying your indoors bins.

I sneakily also used the wheely bin from the empty house two doors up this week! But I put it out and put it back.

42andcounting · 04/01/2017 18:16

As of this month, we now have to pay separately by direct debit to have a green (garden waste) bin collection. I have a feeling there may be drama over the hedge clippings.... Hmm
