To think I should get a new laptop even though I don't have a lot of money?

I have a inexpensive laptop which I use for uni work but even though I bought it brand new and not that long ago (about 18 months) it is slow and rubbish. It probably doesnt help that I don't have broadband at home and so can only access the internet via my phone (can't get broadband due to the property I live in) but it is just so shit I can't get anything done!

I seriously spend probably about 25%-50% of the time I'm supposed to be working just trying to wait for the thing to load/waiting for programs to start working again after they randomly stop working, reconnecting the internet signal after it randomly disconnects etc etc.

I'm just so fed up of it. Trouble is, I don't have a lot of money at the moment as I'm just about to finish my temporary contract at work and although I have another job lined up its not guaranteed.

So wibu to get another one and spend some of the valuable money I have on a replacement that actually works so I can actually do my assignments? I'm thinking of going to somewhere like CEX so I can at least exchange it and get some of the money off another one (rather than get a brand new one).

I know I probably could take it to someone to get it fixed but tbh I can't see it getting much better since its been terrible ever since I first got it, and I need something to do my work on fast!

Several people have asked you what laptop you have, the specs? Why not answer them?

WorkAccount · 03/01/2017 18:15

Yes please tell us the spec, it is as easy as this, a screen shot from my control panel.

If you have Windows 10 you will have a magnifying glass button at the bottom left of the screen (Search Windows), click that and type dxdiag in the field, and press enter. It will bring up your computer's specs for you.

SherlockPotter · 03/01/2017 20:44

wannabe it's not worth the hassle, I've only got 4 months left at uni... I might as well just pay a new laptop, that way I can use after I finish uni.

SharkiraSharkira · 03/01/2017 20:53

Ok, thanks for that advice on how to bring up the specs, I'll have a go at that in the morning.

Also remove/delete unnecesary files from your desktop.

You could try installing Windows 7 instead. I have that running on my laptop which I am using right now. I have had it since 2011 and it works really well.

If you are going to buy another one you'll need to spend a bit on it to make it worthwhile. I'd not pay less than £300 for one. I spent about £550 for mine but they are coming in down in price all the time.

SharkiraSharkira · 04/01/2017 15:32

It's ok, dp managed to tweek a few things and it's running much better at the moment!

I thought my computer "died", but when I installed all the updates, and had a clear out (found advice via google) it worked fien again.

Also make sure you switch it off properly every night, not just in "sleep" mode or close it shut, but go through the proper "shut down".

If you don't shut down properly every day, your PC will slow down more and more until it grinds to a halt.

I bought a little 11 inch laptop for uni and I've never regretted it. It's light so I can take it with me and have everything stored in one place. It was £130 from Argos, reduced from £180. (HP Stream.)

In what way would Windows 7 be better than 10?

I had the impression that 10 was quicker on identical hardware.
