AIBU TV Licence

LouBlue1507 · 03/01/2017 10:02

I don't have a TV licence and don't intend to pay for one.

I don't have access to live TV and only watch Netflix, Itv player, 4od and channel 5. Not BBC iplayer.

I have declared this to the TV licence people and now property is under investigation.

AIBU to refuse them entry if they turn up? I've read horror stories of them being bullies, intimidating and even lying!

OP posts:

They have to prove (using your IP address)

IP Addresses only show a connection between two devices - not who was using them. UK courts would never convict on IP address alone.

nauticant · 03/01/2017 10:59

You're never, ever, tempted to watch something on iPlayer?

No offence, but I don't believe you.

This is indeed a pointless and goady thing to write. I stopped using iPlayer for BBC TV as soon as the law changed. I'm sure loads of others did too.

dailymaillazyjournos · 03/01/2017 11:01

wasonthelist thanks. I had got that wrong. I thought it was ALL the terrestrial stations.

chipsandgin · 03/01/2017 11:05

I think it is really sad that the likely outcome (bigger picture) is that if there are more people like the OP then eventually the BBC will cease to exist and I think the BBC are brilliant. Not only does this country produce some of the best television in the world but it provides opportunities for people from all backgrounds to work both in front of and behind the cameras. Not paying for it/watching it is nothing to be proud of IMO.

wasonthelist · 03/01/2017 11:08

I don't share that analysis of the BBC, nor it's God-given right to exist indefinitely.

RitchyBestingFace · 03/01/2017 11:08

Ritchy how is the OP "leaching off everyone else" by not paying for something she isn't using? In a way, it is you who is expecting the OP to subsidize you by paying for something you are using but not her.

I don't believe that anyone who is interested in TV to the extent that the OP is (ITV player, Netflix, 4OD etc) would NEVER watch / listen to the biggest broadcaster with the best catch up service and range of TV and radio.

These threads come up every so often and there is a firm contingent of people that claim those of us who don't watch, consume, make note of, or have interest in BBC programming are (a) lying liars who lie (b) morally corrupt or (c) odd to the point of abnormality.

I totally understand that many people are not interested in watching TV - I don't believe that there are people who are into TV who don't watch/listen to BBC stuff never ever ever.

DailyFail1 · 03/01/2017 11:08

I don't believe OP's not watching iplayer either.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 03/01/2017 11:09

Yes, this. Why is it so hard to believe some people never watch the BBC?!

Gem90 · 03/01/2017 11:09

chips but why should I or anybody else who doesn't watch any BBC programmes pay for it?? I

mollie123 · 03/01/2017 11:10

Even if you have no exterior aerial - you can have an internal aerial that is not visible at all from outside. I know because I have one which runs a small TV in the bedroom and my conscience is clear (just as I pay lots of council tax which educates children I do not have) because I pay for a TV licence. I do hate this me me attitude that someone else has to pay because I don't want to use something but I can afford to pay for lovely netflix and the rest Angry

wasonthelist · 03/01/2017 11:10

What a strange bunch of folk there are here thinking everyone who likes TV must watch BBC.

Gem90 · 03/01/2017 11:12

Sorry too quick to send.
I never ever ever watch BBC, we don't have normal tv, like I said we
Cancelled our virgin box and now just use apps on the Xbox. We do not have I player downloaded on the Xbox. Why do some people have such an issue with others saying they don't watch BBC?

Gem90 · 03/01/2017 11:14

But mollie why shouldn't the OP pay for and watch Netflix?? I chose paying for Netflix over paying to whatch BBC. Why is that such an issue for you??

lovelearning · 03/01/2017 11:14

145 pounds is really good value, about 50p per day, why do people resent paying?

LivingOnTheDancefloor · 03/01/2017 11:15

Ritchy
I am watching a lot of TV but no BBC at all. Ever. Never have been tempted (I don't even know what is on to be fair...).
This is an internet forum, why would I lie?

RitchyBestingFace · 03/01/2017 11:15

Why is it so hard to believe some people never watch the BBC?!
Because it is rare and unlikely.

What a strange bunch of folk there are here thinking everyone who likes TV must watch BBC.
Or people who know a lot about British TV viewing habits.

£145 for something I never use, and haven't used since I first left home 15+ years ago? Yes, why on earth would I resent that cost? Hmm

wasonthelist · 03/01/2017 11:17

Because it is rare and unlikely.

Please tell us how you know this, otherwise it's just opinion.

BetsyM00 · 03/01/2017 11:18

Another strange quirk of the current regulations is that even if I don't have a TV licence, it is okay for my DMIL to watch iplayer on her laptop whilst babysitting at my house since she is covered by her licence. But the laptop must be running on batteries, it cannot be plugged into the mains!

How this can be policed I have no idea, but confirms what was said above, that they cannot convict on IP addresses alone.

wasonthelist · 03/01/2017 11:21

Send me 145 a year then. I don't wish to avail myself of BBC tv. So I don't. So I don't pay. There is nothing wrong in that. I could gove you a list as long as your arm of reasons I don't want to consume or fund BBC tv.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 03/01/2017 11:22

We've been considering ditching the licence for ages and ages. We just hardly ever watch live tv, prefer to select carefully and enjoy what we watch. 9 times out of 10 we just get irritated or bored by the content if we try live tv! The two televisions in the house are mainly used for the now tv box and the wii. And we absolutely hate using the BBC iplayer, the app is appalling and awful to use. So our obvious next step is to not bother with it all and save the money.

There is an old aerial on the roof, it came with the property, but the chances of us having the equipment or the balls to get up there to remove it are very slight! Were we to get rid of the licence, would its existence count against us despite it being disconnected from an aerial lead?

MiladyThesaurus · 03/01/2017 11:22

We like watching things on demand (using Netflix, Amazon prime and now tv). We never watch live tv and have utterly no desire to. We never watched anything on the iplayer even before they changed the rules (or 4oD or itvplayer or such like).

For some reason people on MN refuse to believe that some of us have no desire to watch the BBC. I don't even watch the BBC content that I pay for via On Demand services because I'm not interested in doing so.

It's not immoral to watch on demand services that you actually pay for. Hmm

LivingOnTheDancefloor · 03/01/2017 11:24

I do hate this me me attitude that someone else has to pay because I don't want to use something
Someone else doesn't have to pay, just don't use it either! Me not payinbg doesn't force you to pay either.
I am not not paying because I want someone else to, I am not paying because I am not using it.
