to be unsettled by the BFG?

Saw the new BFG film this morning with some young relatives (who absolutely loved it).

I was really creeped out by the BFG character, to the point that I found it hard to watch, and considered leaving the cinema. WIBU?
Was it just me or did anyone else find him really uncomfortable to watch? The hairs on my neck were literally standing on end although I'm not really sure why. The CGI maybe. The other giants were ok, but they were more cartoony.

Yes I felt the same. He made me feel really uncomfortable just by looking at him. Can't put my finger on why!

downwardfacingdog · 01/01/2017 20:18

I loved it.

LamppostInWinter · 01/01/2017 20:25

I loved it and the BFG seemed kind and made me feel safe somehow.

Haven't seen the BFG yet, but agree about Polar Express...shudder.

MrGrumpy01 · 01/01/2017 20:33

I have watched the animated version but there was something about the trailers that put me off, it seemed dark somehow.

For me i think it is a book that should just be left to the imagination with a little help from Quentin Blake.

Athrawes · 01/01/2017 20:33

Took my 6 year old to see it and he was absolutely terrified! Lasted half an hour before we had to leave!

trixymalixy · 01/01/2017 20:42

The BFG was absolutely fab. My 7 year old loved it and was lovely to watch her laugh so much at the scene with the queen.

M0stlyHet · 01/01/2017 20:57

If you're feeling creeped out by the BFG, there may well be a reason: Daily Telegraph article on Dahl falling out with his publisher. Basically he wrote some seriously creepy stuff which was then re-written in child-suitable form by his publishers. The original motivation shows through as dark undertones in the final, published versions, I think.

I loved the BFG and thought it looked amazing. And Sophie is based on Sophie Dahl - they do seem very similar.

I don't understand Matilda being the cause of parental torture, what does that mean?

FoggyMorn · 01/01/2017 21:19

Cherrycrumble, I wasn't suggesting anything perverted at all.

I'm saying that the rendering of the BFG character (shape, texture, movements etc) creeped me out. As others have mentioned, I think this is a case of Uncanny Valley- he's just "wrong" in a way the (more cartoony) other giants are not.

I know op I didn't Mean you, I thought the BFG was cute but it's like when people talk about Santa being horrible as he goes into little children's bedrooms, it's so ugly, making something awful out of something lovely. But I did not mean you!

fruityb · 01/01/2017 21:22

Good lord! The BFG pipes dreams into their bedrooms - he's not perving on anyone!! Making anything out of a children's story like that is just plain weird.

AddictedtoLovely · 01/01/2017 21:22

I only watched a bit but yes I get you. But I'm sure inoccent is RD

DonaldStott · 01/01/2017 21:27

Well I am happy I have learned something new. Uncanny Valley. Had to google it and was surprised that it's a thing. Well. You really do learn something new every day on mn.

Meeep · 01/01/2017 21:28

I thought Polar Express was creepy. Haven't seen BFG.

herethereandeverywhere · 01/01/2017 22:41

I didn't mean anything perverted either - it was DD who was disturbed by the thought of the strange man looking into her window (the scene is at the beginning of the book, when Sophie is watching him do it).

It's creepy rather than sweet. The character goes on to develop into being fun and caring but the original scene isn't nice, it's weird.

(Off to google uncanny valley)
