Why smoke when you could Vape?

Returned home from friends house after party. Am tipsy and tired, kids will be up in a couple of hours but we can't sleep until we've had a quick shower as we stink of smoke.
Friend doesn't smoke in the house (apparently) but the house does smell of smoke and the furniture does.

Smokers at party (4 maybe 5 altogether I reckon) stand at back door to smoke but as it's freezing out and as everyone got more drunk towards end of night was more like stood in kitchen near an open door to smoke.

I'm not a smoker so don't understand the difference but some at party are 'exsmokers' who now Vape. They stayed indoors 'smocking' and I'm not certain but it seemed.less toxic to me. It didn't stink, smelt quite nice actually, kind of fruity.

Why.stand in the frozen outside or make your house stink or make non smoking guests stink when you could Vape??

Not meaning to be a twat by the way. Maybe there's a big difference I just don't get but I love my friend. Love her company. Hate the fear of what cigarettes may be doing to her health and on a selfish note hate having to shower as soon as I get back from her house every visit

So as I asked, why smoke (known to be really bad health wise, bad for skin, bad for kids to be around, nothing good about it and it stinks) when you could Vape?

Aren't they the same sort of thing?

Couldn't someone convince my lovely smokey friend to be a lovely vapey friend instead please

Vaping instead of smoking is like having a roast dinner with no gravy - it does the job, but it's not nearly as satisfying.

For a lot of smokers, having a cigarette is more then just a nicotine hit.

Sallystyle · 31/12/2016 12:29

It is not smoking. Nicotine alone is no more dangerous than caffeine.

I have been vaping for three years and love it. You couldn't pay me to go back to smoking. I vape in my house as well and my juice doesn't stink badly. There is a sweet smell to it but most people ask what that nice smell is. I don't blow massive clouds, although I could.

I doubt very much it will be found to be dangerous. New proper evidence suggests the opposite in fact. Of course inhaling nothing but fresh air is the best thing to do but we all have our vices.

Vapers can't win though. Smokers were told they were dirty, smelly, killing people around them. Many of us switched to vaping and now we still get told the same shit.

Oddbins · 31/12/2016 12:32

I gave up smoking about 7 years ago before vaping was a thing. I still miss it but I have never had the desire to try vaping.

It's isn't hot in the same way. I actually miss the sensation of hot smoke in my lungs which may sound weird but it does feel goood

Sallystyle · 31/12/2016 12:33

Temperature control vapes are lovely and hot.

This! ^^, I may get the odd side eye when smoking outside (I am a polite smoker wherever possible) but I had so many more negative comments when vaping, one guy (I was outside a cafe vaping, well away from other patrons) even said, "ugh, you are not on one those awful things are you?" I mean wtf? Why didnt he say well done for getting off the fags? I feel more embarrassed vaping than I do smoking, which is utterly ridiculous. You just cannot win with uppity judgey people, who know nothing about it.
I am going back to vaping over the next day ir so after slipping earlier in the year. I think I will just be telling any smart arses to fuck the fuck off this time.

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 16:03

Just had my first vape in ages... custard cream flavour! It really is lovely!, bye bye disgusting cigs.

TrustySnail · 01/01/2017 16:12

An issue I found with vaping (this will probably sound odd and is difficult to word, so apologies I make no sense) was time - a cigarette is a finite thing, using a vape has no natural end.

Part of my smoking is about taking personal time out - to collect my thoughts - so I need it to be of a fixed duration as part of the ritual. With vaping, you have to decide yourself when to end your vaping 'hit'. That just didn't work for me (there were also other dissatisfactions which PPs have already covered).

BumDNC · 01/01/2017 16:13

Vaping stopped me smoking too it is the only thing that has ever worked this well. Over a year now and I will never go back. I want to now get rid of the vape

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 16:25

I quit altogether with vaping last time too for over a year, I just wasnt that bothered with it in the end, had some stressful stuff going off and slipped back to the cigs 6 months ago so fucking stupid but I have done it before and will do it again!

I get what you are saying trusty, it doesn't sound odd at all, that was weird to me last time too, but eventually it worked in my favour as I just kind of lost the habit and tapered off after a while. I totally do not recommend the cheap vaping cigarette style things though, they are just rubbish and so unsatisfying. I have a proper specialist one. Admittedly, It kind of looks like a crack pipe or something Grin but, it gives the best possible vaping experience with a bit of heat imho, and the flavours available are really really good.

TrustySnail · 01/01/2017 16:34

I think the one I had cost about £20 - not sure if that's cheap or not, I bought it on recommendation rather than shopping round. I bought some menthol style fluid for it, as I usually smoke menthol cigarettes (I think the fruity ones smell awful). It was nice enough, but I found I still wanted cigarettes, so was effectively vaping and smoking at the same time which seemed like a bad idea.

I suppose I don't really have much motivation to give up cigarettes. I can afford to smoke without depriving myself of other things I want (so the 'save up cigarette money and buy yourself x' thing wouldn't work) and I don't really desire longevity - by the time I'm 70 I'm likely to be alone in the world - and the benefits of quitting just don't seem to outweigh the pleasure (mainly psychological) that it gives me.

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 16:40

I think thats fair enough trusty, it has to be something you want to do, its not easy and vaping isnt the same at all. I think its kind of just a way of relieving the ache of lising the hand to mouth thing whilst you cut down on the nicotine. There are some vapes thatare flavoured like tobacco, personally I find it weird as that would make me more likely to crave a real cigarette instead, but it seems to work for some.
I dont like the fruity flavours either, I like the mellow cakey/biscuity flavours. (Like my custard cream Grin)

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 16:40

Losing

100milesanhour · 01/01/2017 16:43

I quit smoking nearly 2 years ago with vaping. I don't find it any different but I can adjust the air flow with my e cig to feel like I'm smoking a cig if I'm feeling stressed.

I guess that it doesn't work for everyone.

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 16:45

I have an eleaf istick (30w) with an aspire juice tank. Finally I have one that doesnt leak, but fogs nicely!

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 16:47

I highly recommend it ;-)

TrustySnail · 01/01/2017 16:47

I wouldn't completely rule out vaping again - thinking about it, the one thing that does bother me about smoking is always having to have a supply of cigarettes - it gives me a 'tethered' feeling which isn't good.

If I did go back to it, it would have to be at a time when everything else in my life felt reasonably happy and calm - not sure that time will ever come!

BroomHandledMouser · 01/01/2017 16:59

I've bought a vape but it shamelessly sits on the side Blush

I know it sounds silly but I don't know what's in them. I imagine that I'd start vaping and in 30 years time I'd get a horrible incurable disease. I know what's in tobacco and I know the risks to my health, not that it makes it ok.

I've had gin and not making much sense!

FarAwayHills · 01/01/2017 17:00

DH quit smoking and now vapes. I used to despair at him smoking and could never understand why he wanted to continue to do something that could make him so ill. I hated the smell, the dirty fag buts and the cost of the things. I honestly had given up all hope of him quitting until he tried vaping. He aims to reduce the nicotine gradually and hopefully quit altogether one day. Although I'm a bit sceptical about vaping for me it's the lesser of two evils and I'm just glad that he's quit the stinky fags.

TrustySnail · 01/01/2017 17:03

BroomHandledMouser

Yes, the 'better the devil you know' aspect of the matter had occurred to me as well. There have also been a few reports of the rechargeable devices combusting, which was off-putting.

yellowstarlight · 01/01/2017 17:07

Is there any reliable evidence about the long-term effects of vaping? I couldn't imagine sucking all those chemicals into my lungs with absolutely no idea of the effect they'd have on my body and health.

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 17:28

There are no chemicals other than nicotine starlight, it is vegetable glycerine, food grade flavouring and nicotine. Thats it. Unless you buy cheapo knockoffs but that is the same in any industry.

Wookiecookies · 01/01/2017 17:46

Cigarettes contain hundreds of chemicals and carcinogens, including cyanide and arsenic etc... on balance, although there are no guarantees with vaping, its safe to say that it is undoubtedly much better than smoking.
