To think it's time we sorted out the mess of titles for spouses of "Sirs" and "Dames"?

Women in heterosexual marriages with "Sirs" get a title just for being married to them.

But husbands of Sirs, spouses of "Danes" and unmarried partners of both get nothing.

Shouldn't we just do away with bolt-on titles for the wives of knighted men?

So the spouse doesn't get any courtesy title for an 'after the name' CBE, OBE etc carol.

It's only knighthoods that throw up an issue.

Another one for solving the problem by getting rid of titles - all honours in fact. I sometimes work with someone who has an hereditary peerage which he insists on introducing himself with - all that matters is his legal qualification which at least he earned.

I'd hate to be called Dame
It's very aging.
And I always think of pantomime dames when I hear it.
Why not Lady ?
It's so much nicer.

It's very redolent of Edwardian ladies with shelf-bosoms, rope pearls and a marked hauteur, isn't it? Smile
