I have an essay due the middle of January for uni course, haven't started it and most people on my course have finished it. I had a week off before Christmas sans DC and did nothing.

It's years since I wrote an essay I don't know where to begin, the course goes on about academic and critical writing and referencing and I feel all lost.

It's stressing me out so much I could cry I need a great big kick up the bum please

Thank you to everyone I now have 600 words of drivel but at least it's better than a blank sheet of paper. I come from a science background and the last essay I wrote would have been in 1997 so I'm a little rusty!

Well done kitty _ I know what you mean - when I tackled my first essay of the course last term I hadn't written one for nearly 30 years!! However having this post inspired me to do some editing today and I managed to cut nearly 1000 words -so only 500 to go....

Well done for getting something on paper, I used to find it helped to think about the sections, intro, conclusions, summary and bibliography, gets even more words for the word count. Maybe try and add a paragraph a day.?

1000 words of utter drivel written, I want to cry why can't I do this? I have all the material in front of me yet I just can't get it down on paper in a coherent way and referenced properly! 18 days to hand in

I'm supposed to be writing a paper over the xmas break (back on 9th) but 800 miles of driving, a head cold and now D&V have made procrastination far too easy My only saving grace is I don't have a deadline as such, but I do know another group over the puddle is working on the same topic, so there's something urgency there.

3. I have a few post graduate degrees and am happy to read/copy-edit for a small fee

Second year Education student here! Also mum to 5 month old DD!

You've got plenty of time left, don't steer yourself out! I don't usually start my assignment until 2 weeks before due date

I just finished one assignment in 3 days (2500 words plus conducting observations and questionnaires).

I have a 1000 word assignment due on Friday and not even looked at it yet I work best under pressure!

Last year, I did a 4000 word assignment in 6 days and got a mark in the 90s So don't be so hard on yourself! It usually takes me hours to write a couple of hundred words but then I find my flow!

My tips are:

• Break the word count down into sections
• Give yourself a word target for the day-
• Reference alphabetically as you go along! Do not rely on Internet or word referencing tools!
• Leave the introduction until last. About 10% of your total word count!

I have 3 text book chapters to read for the last essay of my degree (2000 words) due at the end of January, plus other module activities to do.

I've had 2 weeks break with no scheduled work that I'd planned to use to get ahead while dh was off to keep the dcs busy. What I've actually done is lounge around with dh and the dcs for the last 2 weeks and had vague intentions of studying but never getting passed the "I need to study, after this movie's done I'll do an hour" phase and I've done sod all.

I should be raring to go as I'm finally on the home stretch with one last essay, a project proposal and project, a poster and a couple of short multiple choice tests to go. In reality I've gotten a severe case of procrastinitis and can't seem to get going.

Ok I'm going to do the pomodoro method. If I don't get get at least 6 pomodoros done I expect someone to shout at me through the internet haha

Still here have had 2 nights with not a lot of sleep so have done nothing today going to rocket into it tomorrow. Back at uni on the 9th Jan and want to have most of it done by then. I should have done it in my week off when the DCs were still at school

That's OK. Just look at what you've written and see if switching around the sentences in the paragraphs makes it read better, and try switching the order of the paragraphs, too. Sometimes you think an argument through in your head and you end up putting the last point down first.

Hi all, got up early to get some done, managed an hour before DD2 up (easier with DD1 who will let me study) so now have half of one essay looking much better. Was hoping to get more done tonight but DD2 (3 years old) seems to have other ideas as she is still awake. So that's only one out of the 5 pieces of work I have to give in before February half done . Starting to worry...
