To wonder how gongs are dished out!

I just read that Victoria Beckham is to receive an OBE for service to Fashion- which makes me wonder how great British designers like Georgina Chapman and lots more notable ones have been overlooked all these years. (Of course I stand to be corrected)!

I would think her charity work is more the reason for the gong, rather than her designing.

Bluntness100 - I don't think getting Roland Mouret and a designer from the Rag Trade doing all your work then put your name on the product, makes you a talented designer.
However when it comes to branding- she's a genius!

I worked with someone in the youth justice sector with someone who was given an OBE - she was actually pretty average worker (and actively dangerous in some ways as she'd invest huge amounts of time with clients she liked, at the expense of more needy but less personable kids). She was well in with her local MP and actively lobbied him, sending him information about her success stories and generally pushing herself forward at any given opportunity.

She was no better or worse than any other worker, but actively went out looking for acclaim and got it.

Know a few. They got them for doing the jobs they were paid (extremely well) to do - not going above and beyond or anything. They're completely meaningless in the majority of cases.

Someone I know is widely thought to have negotiated a gong in return for voluntarily leaving the job he was shit at, as he was very hard to fire.

The above website will enable you to nominate someone you think deserves an honour.

Regardless of whether or not you like her designs or think she is a 'proper' designer, her business activities must be employing quite a few people and I think that is always a big factor with these gongs. And I believe that her family do quite a bit for charity, children's health charities in particular. I've read before that they buy and donate a lot of equipment to support families with children with very severe disabilities.

She got the gong for services to HIV and AIDS because she acted as a UN ambassador for HIV/Aids. Not sure that she did that much but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

I have friends who have them, modest hardworking people who deserved them. Not extremely highly paid but very successful in their public service fields. One of them was proud but embarrassed and rarely mentions it unless it would benefit someone else through association.
