AIBU to think if your face moisturiser doesn't have an SPF, there's no point?

I can't believe how many high-end lotions and potions cost a fortune and claim to be anti-ageing, but then they don't include an SPF.

AIBU to think there's no point wasting your money on them?

Yabu if you live in the U.K.

You don't need an SPF unless you're outside for hours every single day. And in the winter you wouldn't need it at all.
We need some sun in order to make Vit D.

I hate moisturisers with spf in them and avoid.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 28/12/2016 07:43

Lots of people mentioning ultra sun. Can you wear it over make up then?

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/12/2016 08:08

It's the end of December in the UK.

It's dark before 8 and after 4. There might be some light, not even sun with all the fog and clouds.

Why on Earth would I slap on sunscreen for that? My vitD levels are low as it is.
It's a marketing thing to sell you more stuff.
I use sunscreen in the summer.

LynetteScavo · 28/12/2016 08:36

Lol at the poster who said moisturiser doesn't do anything! Grin

My usual moisturiser (Aldi caviar) has spf....not that I need it most of the year. Since November I've been using a moisturiser without spf, which is more difficult to find in my experience.

SparklesandBangs · 28/12/2016 08:41

I'm nearing 50 with a darker than average English rose complexion and don't have wrinkles, I do have very sensitive skin which will still break out if I use the wrong moisturiser. Unfortunately I have also had 1 mole removed from my hair line and have plenty of dark patches there. I also suffer from very low vit D levels.
I take vit D supplements
I like to use a moisturiser that works without spf especially when I don't go outside for more than 5 mins in daylight
If I am going outside I layer in the spf especially around my hair line so being separate to my moisturiser and a high factor is important.
Not everyone is the same, choice is good

I live in Scotland. SPF is pointless and will just reduce your vitamin D absorption for half the year.
Hydrating your skin is important, retinoids may help with wrinkles.
I use SPF on fine days only (or if outside for prolonged periods on dull days not in winter) on top of my moisturiser

Pluto30 · 28/12/2016 09:17

SPF15 is useless anyway. Use a sunscreen.

The moisturiser I use at home (Nive Pure and Natural) has no SPF and I like it because it doesn't irritate my eyes.

But I use the Shiseido sunscreen and sun protect foundation (each SPF30) otherwise.

Pluto30 · 28/12/2016 09:22

(Should add that I live in Australia).

CoteDAzur · 28/12/2016 09:26

I use Shiseido SPF 50 face cream, from March to about November, in a place with about 300 days of glorious sunshine per year.

Those of you using sunblock in UK in December sound nuts. Sorry.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 28/12/2016 09:32

To use sunscreen effectively you'd have to reapply it several times a day. Does anyone actually do that when they are working? Go to the loo at break and lunchtime, take off your make-up, start again? I suspect not. But at least if you have the SPF cream on your face and you pop out at lunchtime you've got some protection even if it's only a tiny bit. Better than nothing at all.

The idea that the sun isn't strong enough to cause skin damage in the winter is wrong. In fact it can catch you unawares in the winter precisely because you think it is weak.

As for allergies, many SPFs use physical methods rather than chemical, it may be worth trying one out. I am sensitive to many creams so it's trial and error to find the ones that I can tolerate.

And if you have darker/olive skin - you CAN get skin cancer! Your skin may be less sensitive to sun damage but it will still happen.

All that said, I am currently not using an SPF because I ran out before Christmas and physical sunscreens are more difficult to find on the typical high street and I am sensitive to the chemical ingredients so can't use the usual brands. Because I run and cycle, I need to be careful - many runners find themselves with skin cancer because of sun exposure. But equally you don't want something that stings when you sweat and it goes in your eyes. Green People make a good one. It's also worth looking at the website Victoria Health which has a good selection of both chemical and physical sunscreens and SPF creams.

PS surely in Australia you use sunblock all year round? Even on cloudy days? It's not the sunlight, it's the UV rays that cause the damage.

I use this one currently, feels like cotton on your skin.

ICJump · 28/12/2016 09:45

I use a an spf 15 moisturise for my face and skin year round. I us moogoo. I only use moogoo. Since I started using it I haven't been burnt.

I live in Australia. I also wear a wide brim hat, sunnies and cover up.

I do. I just don't use it on days when I'm not leaving the house.

I love it. The night cream is great too. But I hate their moisturisers with SPF added, they irritate the hell out of my eyes.

Newbrummie · 28/12/2016 10:32

You would be amazed what Aussies don't do, probably more the Brits over tyere, but I've seen girls in their 20's who look 40 because day to day you do forget just how hot it is, you get used to it

PickAChew · 28/12/2016 10:42

Moisturiser with SPF makes my face itch. Since I only use facial moisturiser to soothe and soften my sensitive skin, without any anti ageing expectations, that sort of defeats the object.

liz70 · 28/12/2016 10:46

I live in Scotland. I need all the sun I can get. I only ever use s.s. for a few weeks in summer when I actually need the stuff.
