Was so looking forward to seeing it on Tv, but it was well rubbish really. I know the original story had little to it, but why the need to add in Grandpa do we really need to be miserable at christmas? It's supposed to be a cute happy adventure story and I feel like I've just sat and watched a sob story? Was it just me?

When reading the book I akways felt sorry for the poor bear. He looked so sad walking back to his cave and I told the kids he was only trying to make friends. Was pleased that my view was justified. The Snowman doesn't exactly end well ...

Booboo66 · 24/12/2016 23:21

My DD's (3&7) both loved it, my 3 year old is now very smug as she has always maintained that at the end of the book the bear looks sad because he wanted to be friends but they ran away. 7 yo was sure it's because he didn't manage to catch and eat them! The argument is now settled at least.

MrGrumpy01 · 24/12/2016 23:38

My 8 yr old (asd) refused to watch The Snowman and The Snowman and the Snowdog today (have the DVD) he just finds it all too sad.

RainyDayBear · 24/12/2016 23:49

Glad we missed it, I cried at The Snowman and Snowdog today, a sad and lonely bear would have had me bawling (I am a total sap)

noelheadBandAid · 24/12/2016 23:51

Hated it. Absolutely hated that ending.

I don't remember much of last Xmas (no I wasn't that drunk) because I was fairly grief stricken at that time- glad this wasn't on then or I reckon it would have just about finished me off.

MoonriseKingdom · 25/12/2016 00:03

I don't know whether to watch it after reading this thread. I watched The Snowman and The Snowman and the Snowdog this evening with my 2 year old. She loved them but they made me a bit tearful. First David Bowie then I had forgotten how sad the ending of The Snowman is.

Bear Hunt was on too late for us but were planning to watch it another time as it is one of her favourite books. Channel 4 what are you doing to me? (Love A Muppet Christmas Carol though).

dicdicnurse · 25/12/2016 00:21

We love the book although I admit I don't recall noticing the last page picture before. My eldest dd (6) enjoyed it but dd (4) asked me to turn it off because she was so sad. It played on her mind after lights out too wih a few questions about the bear.

Bettyspants · 25/12/2016 00:44

Youngest has just woken up worried about bear.

Soubriquet · 25/12/2016 14:05

Watched it today (recorded last night)

Floods of tears from me....luckily dd wasn't too faxed

That poor bear. Even Dh welled up a tad daft sod

Also hit a bit close to home as this is the first Christmas without my grandad. He died in May

amammabear · 25/12/2016 14:45

On the same note, don't go to watch Moana if you were upset by this... The kids weren't bothered, but I cried 5 times!!!

AuntGertrude · 25/12/2016 16:00

I thought it was good. The book is terribly boring, and I thought the development of the story was about right, even if sad.

spankhurst · 25/12/2016 16:04

I quite liked it. The bear ends up alone on the beach in the moonlight in the book anyway, doesn't he? The ending wasn't a shock to me, although a bit sad.

Northernlurker · 25/12/2016 19:33

I should have listened to you all. We watched this evening. Dd1 was particularly badly affected but we all cried.

Hulababy · 25/12/2016 19:41

We watched last night and yes, the grown ups and teen Dd were left sad to say the least. Went over the head of the 3 year old. Rest of us needed more wine to cheer us up!

WalkingCarpet · 25/12/2016 19:59

It was really fucking depressing.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 25/12/2016 20:02

Cried too. I lost a couple of important people recently, so that bit me for a start, and I'd always felt sad for that bear, especially since I read that the final picture was modelled on someone Helen Oxenbury knew with depression.

I thought they were going to change to a happy ending. But then they didn't. Sad

amy85 · 25/12/2016 20:23

Have you people not seen the last page of the book?!?! In the book the bear ends up walking alone in the beach looking very sad...Not sure why so many people are surprised by the ending of the film

Saucery · 25/12/2016 20:38

He doesn't make friends with any of the children.
There is no Dead Grandad coda.

It encourages you to read into it what you, or your young child, want to read into it, not whacks you round the head with it whilst shouting It is Christmas Eve! You must be sad at Sad Things!!!

Wifflewaffles · 25/12/2016 20:45

I didn't see what was wrong with it, but I'm not familiar with the book. I thought that the animation and the art work was beautiful.

AnaisB · 25/12/2016 21:00

We thought it was good. It was sad, as the book is sad. I get the point that the dead grandpa adds extra sadness, but I'm ok with that. Christmas has an element of sadness for loads of people so I don't mind that being reflected.

Bananabread123 · 25/12/2016 21:25

There's a time and place for difficult and challenging material... a kids cartoon on Christmas Eve evening is not it.

Stingray2008 · 25/12/2016 21:30

Ive read that dull book so many times over the years and have seen the last page just took it the bear was fed up that he didnt get to eat the kids not that he had been left alone to live out his days ill and hungry in a cave.

witsender · 25/12/2016 22:25

Saw it today, didn't find it all that sad, and no-one seemed particularly interested in it!
