AIBU to think it's a bit rude to do this

I probably am being grumpy but I spend Christmas alone and I don't mention it explicitly but people know I do.

But people still ask what I'm doing for Christmas and I say brightly oh, just the usual and they say oh ...

I was thinking today, is that not actually a bit rude, that they ask and clearly don't intend to invite me (I don't mean they should but it's awkward!)

Or AIBU?

Another question I'd never ask is. What do you do for a living. How bloody embarrassing might it be if they were unemployed. Well you can ask the question and pass comment if you're willing to give them a job, mind

People don't ask because they genuinely are bothered by the answer - they ask because it's random small talk. If you want to be invited somewhere then ask - you can't expect people to be psychic.

Or are you someone who likes to say nothing until after the event then moan about not being invited anywhere
