Comments that homeowners make to renters

Here are a few gwms:

Of course homeownwrs take more pride in there homes and tidy them more (my rented house was messy as i was depressed)

Oh you SHOULD get a mortagage... with what? Peanuts@

The landlord cant even be bothered to tart up your kitchen... the doors ate hanging off. ( One door is sliggtly hanging off after being repaired repeatedly.

Its a shame that all your money is going to the landlord.

Aibu to find such comments very irritating?

dingdongthewitchishere · 23/12/2016 13:43

I never got any comment when I was renting, but got a few when I first bought: you will have to pay for all the repairs yourself, what a waste of money, the property market is going to crash, you will lose a fortune Hmm|

A few years down the line, haters have been proven long, just ignore them

CaraAspen · 23/12/2016 13:45

The obsession with property ownership in this country is laughable. I think proper Europeans do it differently and I would too if I hadn't got suckered in.

StinkyMcgrinky · 23/12/2016 13:49

"Your rent is more than my mortgage. Why don't you buy, it's such a waste of money"

Because my rent is more than your mortgage I can't save enough money for a deposit to get my own house Angry

"Didn't you want to buy before you had kids?"

Yes, but I also wanted to have kids before the menopause started...

MrsMattBomer · 23/12/2016 13:57

Yeah I think they were being insensitive but probably not on purpose. They are right that a lot of landlords basically rent out slums and don't really repair them any more than they have to.

And they're right that it's a shame you are essentially paying someone else's mortgage for them. Obviously you have no choice but when we were renting I hated the fact that £450 every month was going to a landlord for a shitty two bedroom terraced. Now we're only paying about that much in mortgage for a 5 bedroom detached with a 10% deposit.

SleepFreeZone · 23/12/2016 13:59

We are having a massive road built nearby that will improve a big A road. That will be running through villages that used to no doubt be green and leafy and quiet. I am absolutely sure that those homeowners who now have massively devalued houses wish they were in rentals.

You honestly cannot buy true security. You might think you have the perfect house and then the neighbour's from hell move in next door or the pretty field opposite becomes a huge housing development or a waste incinerator, or a road gets built in your back garden and there's nothing you can do about it. Of course there are issues with renting but I always think at least you can move!

CaraAspen · 23/12/2016 14:01

Yep.

HermioneJeanGranger · 23/12/2016 14:03

The only comment I really hate is "It's cheaper to have a mortgage - why don't you buy somewhere?"

Yes, because on minimum wage and paying rent that's nearly double your mortgage for less space, I have hundreds left over to save up for a deposit Hmm

Wishforsnow · 23/12/2016 14:05

I would definitely prefer the option of buying with interest rates at 17% when you can buy a house for two times one average salary than have them at 3% and need 8x 2 incomes

SleepFreeZone · 23/12/2016 14:11

Something is going to give I'm sure as we were looking at houses over the last few days twice the price of the house we currently live in and you honestly don't get much more for your money, it's really weird. New houses built on tiny plots are really expensive. I just don't see how house prices can continue to rise, particularly post Brexit. If i was renting I would jus wait it out as I think st some point there will be a crash.

NicknameUsed · 23/12/2016 14:38

I don't understand the obsession with home ownership in this country I really don't

"Maybe something to do with private renting being totally shit in the UK. We lived in 6 houses where the landlord decided to sell less than a yr after we moved in. Plus ridiculous rents etc."

This ^^

I have seen so many threads on here from posters who live in awful conditions because the landlord won't carry out repairs or general maintenance on their accommodation.

The laws on private landlords renting out need to be tightened up considerably.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/12/2016 14:44

Comments that homeowners make mainly to those who can't afford to be homeowners
i.e. yet another way to look down on others

SherlockPotter · 23/12/2016 14:54

It's not your home if you rent it's someone elses

^^ this is the comment that annoys me the most!

RFHrules · 23/12/2016 14:57

My late aunt and uncle were fairly comfortably off and were married in the 1950s when it was relatively easy to afford to buy, but they chose to rent. They didn't want the hassle of home ownership. They were lucky with the landlord and letting agent of their last flat though (the same family owned the flat for the duration and the letting agent remained in place too - they moved there in 1970ish and stayed until they died 5 and 6 years ago). It made finalising their estates easier for their executors too - big cash deposits and a few shares, no house to sell.

Despite their good experience, the rules would need to be tightened up before I'd opt to rent. Some landlords are so scummy and their tenants have to battle for the basics. I recognise my good fortune in having a choice. I also recognise my good fortune in being born in the early 1970s - mortgages were more affordable when I was a young worker, and you often needed only a smallish deposit. I got on the property ladder in London in the 1990s with a c£37k salary and a £4k (I think) deposit.

YetAnotherUser · 23/12/2016 14:57

Having worn the shoe on both feet (rented all through my twenties), I can definitely sympathise.

It was incredibly depressing to be pissing away the rent money each month, which is absolutely more than I am paying on my mortgage... Being caught in the vicious circle on not being able to afford a deposit because I was paying rent, and unable to escape rent because I couldn't afford a deposit was very depressing.

I think the irritation stems mainly from the inability to make a change and being stuck in the system.

SantasJockstrap · 23/12/2016 14:58

I rented for 20 years before buying, no one ever made a comment and I wouldn't have cared if they did

DeleteOrDecay · 23/12/2016 15:05

YANBU, the worst one is "renting is dead money". As far as I'm concerned me and my family get a roof over our heads in exchange for paying rent. It may not be 'ours' in terms of home ownership but it is still our home.

The alternative would be becoming homeless so no rent isn't 'dead money' at all.

specialsubject · 23/12/2016 15:06

MN will love this. Solid landlord hate.

merry christmas.

BadKnee · 23/12/2016 15:13

Comments that renters make to owners.

" You love lording it over others don't you" - (OP)

"It's alright for you -you do't have to pay rent - all your money is going to something you own" - Er -no it isn't. Google "interest payments on a loan and see.

(You will repay many thousands in interest - and you think that isn't dead money?)

"Alright for you - my Landlord took a week to fix our boiler" - Yeas and I have to save up to fix mine - and it will be longer than that.

Etc Etc. Just be nice.

SapphireStrange · 23/12/2016 15:17

It all boils down to 'you're only renting'.

'Do you own your place or are you just renting?'

'Is there any possibility of you buying it at some point?' when I'd just moved into a nice new rented flat.

Mortgages are just another form of renting; your landlord just happens to be the bank instead of an individual or letting company.

DISCLAIMER DP and I are now homeowners, but rented happily for years and only bought because for various reasons it sort of fell into our laps. I'd happily go back to renting too.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 23/12/2016 15:30

Those of you who are renting and so can't afford a deposit on a property - what was the reason for you renting instead of buying in the first place? Genuine question.

expatinscotland · 23/12/2016 15:34

'Those of you who are renting and so can't afford a deposit on a property - what was the reason for you renting instead of buying in the first place? Genuine question.'

For real? Because they couldn't afford a deposit/fees. Duh.

ScruffyTheJanitor · 23/12/2016 15:45

Genuine question.

Too many reasons, some include:
Cheap houses bought by people to rent them out, forcing first time buyers out of the market.
Earnings not high enough to get a FTB mortgage.
Not enough deposit (£15k)

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 23/12/2016 15:46

Oh don't be so bloody snippy it's a genuine question!

Have you got a proper answer - such as why they didn't stay put and get a deposit together instead of going into rented?

SapphireStrange · 23/12/2016 15:47

stay put where?

ScruffyTheJanitor · 23/12/2016 15:48

such as why they didn't stay put and get a deposit together instead of going into rented

Because I needed a roof over my head or i'd get very very cold.
probably wet too.

I suppose I could have got an old box or a brolly to sit under whilst I saved foir another 5 years.
