To dislike this Christmas card trend

Family/baby photo shoots that are then sent as the images on Christmas cards.

I know it's the done thing in America and has been for years but I just don't like it.

My friend from work spent a fortune on a photo shoot for her DS and his pictures are emblazoned all over the Xmas card. My DH asked whose baby it was and said he found it strange that there was a child he didn't know staring back at him in his living room.

AIBU to think just buy some cards instead of spending the best part of £1000 on photo shoots and getting cards made?

I know I'm probably BU

A part of me wants to do a Kardashian family style tacky Christmas card and know that my friends and relatives have to look at it for a few weeks.

PabloEscobarReallyLovesHisKids · 23/12/2016 13:28

Classy.

I like them, although we don't do the whole family posed only the DC. I don't do them every year though but have this year. The photo only takes up a third of the card space

YABU

I agree that it's weird to give to people you are not close to, but to family and friends? Instead of buying a pack without thought, a family has taken time and effort to do a nice thing. I am too disorganised to do them myself, but my family would love to receive a family photo. I've received a few this year again, I think they are lovely.

Quite like the humour in this one...

Xmas Grin
NovemberInDailyFailLand · 23/12/2016 13:48

We do, but only to our close family and friends.

Although, the pets have been known to star in them as well...

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 23/12/2016 14:38

We do these and our friends and family tell us that they can't wait to see them every year and some of them have kept every card (his nan has some framed in her living room!). We do however poke fun at ourselves such as the year my husband dressed as a reindeer and pulled me along in a sleigh! Oh and we always take the pictures ourselves so it only costs us the money to print the cards (which is more than enough imo). I'm already planning next years card!

LaContessaDiPlump · 23/12/2016 14:43

I do cards which have photos of the dc printed on; people have complimented me on them for a few years now! I do try to make them funny/unsaccharine.

Good to know I'm either tacky or aspirational Grin

SchnitzelvonKrummsverylowtum · 23/12/2016 14:55

We use camera phone shots of the dc, but only for close family and friends. I wouldn't send them to neighbours or colleagues.

tonymac84 · 23/12/2016 14:59

Last year we sent out cards with our lo on them but only to family and close friends. Certainly didn't spend a grand on the shoot/cards either.

sortthetacheoutbernard · 23/12/2016 15:02

So narcissistic. I hate them

sortthetacheoutbernard · 23/12/2016 15:03

They might say they like them.

PollytheDolly · 23/12/2016 15:16

Well this was on my cards to my adult DCs, hot off the iPhone via the pig of moon Xmas Grin

Alpaca You can still do that but only if the cats have that 'I'm going to shit on your shoes later' expression Grin

LeadPipe · 23/12/2016 15:20

I'd love to do an over styled posed Christmas card. I think it could be good fun.

I love the one autumnalleaves posted.

or they mean it, I do like to receive them and I know grand parents love them. I feel touch when friends send me photos of their family.

We make cards with DD, doesn't cost a penny!
I do put a little photo inside of just her for the relatives that live far away and don't see her often :) and I even write a little sentence telling them what she's up to etc.

Is this terrible?

AutumnalLeaves38 · 23/12/2016 17:26

No, they sound lovely, lalalemon, and I'd be touched to get one like you described.

Xmas pics of friends' growing kids always welcome here, whether family snaps or professional photo shoots. (I especially have a guilty pleasure-type love of the ones featuring hacked-off teens, who've clearly only agreed to be included after major bribery). Xmas Wink

ginauk84 · 23/12/2016 17:28

I do my own photos, cheap backdrop from amazon and well away! However I only send the personalised ones to family.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/12/2016 17:36

Livia
I think that expression is guaranteed... especially if I try to dress them up in outfits!
