today's gem (when talking about my sister's dire financial situation) "well of course you were very lucky, me and your dad supported you through university."

WTF???? what the flipdeflippingdoodle is the woman talking about?????

not one brass farthing did I ask for or get from them while I was studying or EVER in fact.

I was so taken aback that I just went "mmmmm" and now I am furious.

please tell me it's trivial and a long time ago and I should not be so mean to an old lady as to disturb her rose tinted spectacles.

maybe I could start doing it to her:
ah mum, do remember how you used to lock us in the coal cellar and make us eat dog food when we were naughty? oh happy days

I would do this op - genius!

I know this feeling. Recently my siblings all got a large cash gift except me because supposedly my rent in university was paid for me. I worked every weekend and had multiple jobs in the summer to get through university. I knew better then to ask for help by that age because any help was always thrown in my face.

I used to find the rewriting of history frustrating but now I just say oh really is that so.

The historical revisionist: anything negative done by us will be turned on its head and we come out looking such nice, caring parents. Any challenge to the narrative we control will be met with tantrums, descriptions to others that the child is mentally ill, mistaken, cruel etc. Accept the narrative or else!
