To be so worried about how I am going to get to work?

I have a motorbike, my only form of transport.

It broke down recently and while it is fixable, it's a difficult thing to fix that will take time and money so I'll be without it over the Christmas period.

Which fucking sucks because I am working Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, NYE and NYD.

There are no buses or trains at all on 2/4 of these days and the other 2 are severely restricted meaning I cannot get to work on time.

Aibu to be freakinv out about how I will get to work? And also to think that my boss can't really be annoyed at me about this (although he absolutely 100% will be and will probably result in me not being kept on after Christmas).

I have no friends or family who could give me a lift, except dp who will be working 1/2 drive in the opposite direction.

I'm totally fucked aren't I Sad

Train stations often have inside waiting rooms you could wait in for free.

I agree with a PP who said that it will look like an excuse not to work xmas and if you want to be kept on post xmas you need to make sure that you are there.

Kirriemuir · 22/12/2016 17:31

Or what about a local Facebook page? Ask if anyone is working and would give you a lift for petrol?

FedupofbeingtoldIcantusemyname · 22/12/2016 17:37

No, no uber Kirrie, we are in the arse end of nowhere Grin

Y'know Christmas, you would think that, and at the train station they do actually have one but it is always bloody locked! I have no idea what the point of having them is if they are never open Angry

I KNOW it will look like an excuse and it is really shitty timing but I am honestly not doing it on purpose. It is bloody inconvenient for me too, as well as the massive hike in money spent getting to work (about 7 times as much), the train/bus I get is over 2 miles away from where I live so just to get to the station and back again is a 4 mile walk up/down a steep unlit country lane but I have no choice.

Glad it is sorted. Please find something better where you are not dependent on bike. Thanks

glad you are sorted! However I have to disagree with you - if you couldn't get in your boss would be well within their rights to be angry with you. Transport issues aren't more understandable or justifiable than any other issues affecting getting to work, like illness, bad weather, childcare etc. If you commit to working (any time - but especially over Christmas,) it's up to you to make sure you can get there, and have a back up plan for emergencies. Otherwise people are fully entitled to be disappointed with you if you let them down!

I totally get that my boss would be upset, I'm sure I would be in his position, I just don't think it would be very fair to get angry with me about it as it isn't anything within my control (ie, my bike breaking down). Of course, it IS still my responsibility to be in work on time so I have to find an alternative! It is hard trying to plan for emergencies sometimes though, especially when you don't have any family or friends who could help you out. Some people just don't seem to think that people like that exist. When I first mentioned in passing that I was going to have trouble on Boxing day my manager's response was 'well, you'll just have to get a lift then'. But what he doesn't realise is that I just don't have anyone to ask except Dp. If he couldn't do it, or If I was single, I'd be screwed.

In all honesty, if I was totally reliant on public transport I wouldn't have gone for that job in the first place but then again I probably wouldn't have been able to find a job much closer, this is a rural area and the place I work is the nearest decent sized town so understandably that is where most of the jobs are. Virtually everyone who works around here relies on their cars to get around.
