To think my client could have given me more than one day's notice

That she won't be needing me for the next 4 weeks?

I'm a cleaner, I cleaned this evening and she left a note next to my money saying "off on hols tomorrow, see you again 17th Jan!"

It has completely fucked my budget for the month and next month (I work 5 hours once a week so that's £200 I'm down)

I'm really bloody pissed off that she didn't think to tell me before

Thanks Dangly that's nice to know.

RedastheRose · 22/12/2016 22:41

Like others on here I also still have cleaner coming in when away on holiday and pay her. She will do other spring cleaning type work that gets missed in the weekly clean through and it is lovely coming home to a sparkling house. She should have at least given you several weeks notice so that you had time to arrange alternative work for those weeks. Very unreasonable and unfair.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/12/2016 23:18

Are you in Nottingham OP. I need a new cleaner!

dansmum · 23/12/2016 08:51

If you have been with her for a year , and like other mnetters have said, you dont fill those hours with new clients..it is time you had a 'review' of your 'agreement' with her in the spring.. Draw up what jobs you are paid for, what jobs you will need additional pay for and holiday options ( pay to clean as normal/ paid to do additional deep cleaning or paid 50% retainer not to attend)
Explain that you are well regarded and have been approached to take on other work and this is the agreement you are now using. If she's smart..she will keep you...if not..you've got a great document to usefor new clients...

OP can I just say that maybe it's worth mentioning it to her.
A few years back when I'd go on holiday I would always only say it to my cleaner last minute. I was young and a bit self centred and only thought about what affected me, I didn't think much about anyone else's perspective. Plus I never really saw her.
If my cleaner had ever sat me down (or called me about it) and explained that she relies on the money etc etc, I'd probably have thought about it and of course paid her when I was away or at the very least given her proper notice.
Yes, I should have known all of the above without having to be told but I'm ashamed to say that I didn't. Now being a bit older and having a bit more perspective, I will always pay a cleaner when I'm on holiday but not when she is, if that makes sense. So give her a chance to redeem herself and if she doesn't, then you know it's time to move on.

Where do you stop with people who provide you with a service?

Tutors?
Piano teachers?
Gardeners?
Fitness Instructors?

Piano teachers you pay for the term usually - if you miss one that is your look out.

Same for tutor.

Personal trainer I buy a block of sessions and arrange the next after my last one and there isn't a set day/time.

Gardener I would treat like a cleaner if it is a regular time - if they come every other Thursday I wouldn't stop it if I was on holiday.

allegretto · 23/12/2016 11:51

Meanwhile my cleaner gave me one day's notice that she was going on holiday! Bit pissed off as she has been paid already.

We do need to start a board. Im available for cleaning and am too scared to put leaflets through doors, and go into an unknown house for safety reasons.

GoLightlyHollie · 23/12/2016 13:26

Let's lobby MNHQ.
Everyone is scared of the AIBU board crowd so if we use the fear as a lobbying tool, cleaning professional board will be up and running in no time.

Pollyxcx · 23/12/2016 23:05

They'll tell us to use the local boards which are just full of tumbleweed Wink

Cheeky bastards, you should dump them.

I am a photographer and rely on my shoots to pay the bills etc especially at this time of year. TWO of my shoots cancelled last minute the week before Christmas... I guess they ran out of money but that left me really struggling and £300 down. People don't think about the consequences!! The least your employer should have done was pay you for their holidays!!
