To let the children watch Gremlins?

We are watching a Christmas film every day this week together. Already feel a bit done in with all the Christmas schmaltz and looking for something a bit less orthodox. Obviously will draw the line at Bad Santa but I think Gremlins would be good fun and they would love Gizmo. Or is it completely inappropriate? They are 8 and 6 and don't scare easily.

I let my DS watch it, completely not recalling how bad it was in parts. He treated it as an instructional video for his more spirited antics for the next few days. He is 4 Shock!

Santamajormummy000 · 20/12/2016 23:09

Sorry, BBFC.

RJnomore1 · 20/12/2016 23:11

Gremlins should be fine - it's almost cartoonish apart from the chimney bit - but please don't subject your small children to the emotional trauma that is Edward scissor hands!😮

MrsderPunkt · 20/12/2016 23:15

Mine are a bit older, and absolutely loved Cool Running - haven't seen them laugh like that for ages!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 20/12/2016 23:16

I absolutely shit myself at Gremlins - I was 15 when it came out! I had nightmares for weeks, and I don't scare easily.

I watch it now and love it though Grin

lilyb84 · 20/12/2016 23:19

I watched it around 6 as my mum didn't realise it was quite violent and gruesome. It scared me but in a fun way - no nightmares.

I didn't remember the chimney story so guessing it went over my very young head at the time! Probably wouldn't go over an 8 year old's head though so if they believe in Santa maybe not...

Great film though and essential Christmas viewing if you think they're old enough!!

Castleheights · 20/12/2016 23:19

I watched aged 10 , starts off ok but is actually quite scary is places.
I would be putting it in for my 10 & 8 yo.

Castleheights · 20/12/2016 23:20

Would not

bloodyteenagers · 20/12/2016 23:20

I was amazed to find this film a 15. I would have been about 10 when I watched it. Along with goonies (12) Think my D.C.'s were also around 10 when they watched Gremlins.

SausageD0g · 20/12/2016 23:27

I wouldn't for my 8 year old. Wouldn't even think about it until 12 if it's a 12!!

Lionking1981 · 20/12/2016 23:50

I watched gremlins aged around 6/7. I thought it was great and hilarious. However, the reason I started the thread was because I was also allowed to watch poltergeist at a young age which has genuinely traumatised me for life so I maybe not the best in deciding.

The poltergeist films are very scary. I watched them all at various sleepovers during my teens,I was old enough by then not to have nightmares from them but any younger and they would have terrified me.

RJnomore1 · 21/12/2016 08:21

Poltergeist is totally different from gremlins and not suitable at all for children.

Joolsy · 21/12/2016 08:30

DD1 watched Gremlins aged approx 7. I skipped the bit where Phoebe Cates talks about Santa (how she found her dad dead - same bit). DD1 loved it. But you know your own children and how they react. I might put it on for DD2 sometime - she's now the same age. I don't really think there's many gruesome bits - the worst part I think is them changing from good to evil

Katedotness1963 · 21/12/2016 08:58

I hadn't watched it for years then saw it again last year. I was surprised at how scary some parts are.

Newtssuitcase · 21/12/2016 09:01

Completely inappropriate for an 8 and 6 year old IMO

lilyborderterrier · 21/12/2016 10:03

God no they'll be traumatised, it still really freaks me out and I'm 38.

minipie · 21/12/2016 10:18

I still find it scary. No I wouldn't let my kids watch it... not if I wanted them to sleep that night.
