keep kids off school 2 days to avoid noro?

School breaks up on Tuesday for 2 of my 3 kids (1 has already broken up). Noro is doing the rounds in the school and multiple children have come down sick this weekend, the parents FB page is lit up with cases.

I don't want my kids to catch it, but the idea of essentially pulling a sickie makes me feel naughty especially as my son is already on a sickness warning as he had 2 days off sick (vomiting ) in September, incidentally these were his first days off as his first year he had 100 % attendance.

I just really really don't want to spend Xmas clearing up vomit. We are a big family in a small house and if 1 catches it it'll spread through like wild fire and my husband really can't get sick as his work this time of year is vital and insanely busy.

WWYD? Lots of parents on the page say they won't be sending their kids in. Chances are they won't catch it, but if they do? Argh!!!!!!!!

YY to the classes lax about contacting the parents. DD had very clear instructions that I should be contacted and paramedics rang if I was uncontactable (asthma). No one rang and she almost ended up in PICU one evening. Thankfully the meds in a & e and on the ward did the job and it wasn't needed. She'd been having an asthma attack all afternoon. Reason I hadn't been contacted? The teacher thought my well behaved polite young girl who never caused a problem...'was just being mardy'. Hmm Their exact words.

To those who think noro isn't a big deal. All three of us caught it and came down with it very quickly. I also remember my Mums friend telling me how a church friend had popped round, 'with a bit of a jippy tummy'. It was noro. Said friend contracted it, and ended up in hospital on drips the whole works. Sad

OP says she's got a 4month old who's just had an op, I definitely wouldn't chance recovery. I hope 4 month old is fully recovered soon Flowers and you should definitely shop sick kid mum selfish woman .

Sorry OP. I meant to say I definitely wouldn't chance it affecting baby's recovery. Blush

As a parent since October has had my kids have a tummy bug 4 times and a horrible virus. I would say just to keep them off. It's Christmas Xmas Smile

Zumbarunswim · 18/12/2016 20:54

Keep them off definitely!!

In theory if they got a hold of their selection boxes (or any of the other sugar laden rich food about this time of year) and ate them all and vomited cos of too much rubbish then you'd still be supposed to keep them off for 48 hours anyway. My son used to make himself sick from crying too much and I asked if I should keep him off the 48 hours and was always told yes. All you need to say is they've been sick and to be on the safe side you are keeping them off. They won't be doing any work anyway.

Pattakiller · 18/12/2016 20:56

I'd definitely keep them off, they won't be doing anything the last two days before Xmas!

fraggle84 · 18/12/2016 21:01

Keep them at home, it's a tiring time of year and they will benefit from a rest germ free!

debbs77 · 18/12/2016 21:01

I'd keep them off. I have had 4 children and me sick this week. We kept to the 48 rule. Yet others, who had children sicky in the night, sent them in the next day for Christmas parties!!!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 18/12/2016 21:04

I would keep them off and if they want to "report" you then let them as they'd be laughed at! 4 days out of half a year is really nothing. I wouldn't risk them being that poorly over Christmas and they're unlikely to miss out on anything at this point

Ilovenannyplum · 18/12/2016 21:11

I'd keep them off. They don't really do much end of term do they?
I wouldn't fancy noro over Christmas Confused

bookwormnerd · 18/12/2016 21:11

Keep them off, we have had stomach bug twice this term. Think daughter has had 4 days off. Several children at school have ended up in hospital with it. My Daughter is in 2 more days and im keeping fingers crossed she does not come down with another stomach bug or chicken pox which is also making the rounds. There have been a few kids in school playground which clearly wernt well enough to be in.

I told the truth when I did it-said couldn't risk dd getting it (she has type 1 diabetes) and that I'd keep them all off they were very understanding
Ds2 is currently recovering from sickness so fingers crossed he hasn't passed it on !

Arrowfanatic · 19/12/2016 14:38

Well for those who are curious I ended up sending the kids in. The "good girl" in me just couldn't cope with essentially fibbing to get the kids out of school. I've sent them with strict reminders to wash their hands lots and to keep fingers out of mouths and I'm praying that they won't catch it. Considering the primary school has almost 800 pupils it was very quiet on the playground this morning so looks like lots of kids didn't go in (you're usually buffeted by hoarded of running screaming kids in the morning).

I hope they won't get sick, I'll be washing their hands the instant they set foot in my house. But I'll be relieved to get these 2 days over with.

I hope they stay well.

Normally I'm all for sending kids in, but in your situation I think I might have kept them off. I'd have rung in saying 'not coming in due to the norovirus' which would be true.

I wouldn't hesitate to keep them off, they won't be noticed in the madness of lots of people being off.
It just isn't worth possibly wrecking Christmas and the holidays when they won't be doing much anyway
