Mystery Present - AIBU to ask, is this art??

I have a 6 month old and today he got his first Xmas present, sent through the post and addressed to him. Problem is we cant work out what it is, or who sent it. To clarify DH family are artists and we always have a painting or two from them for Xmas. There art can be of the rather (ahem) "abstract" style. To me though, this looks like someone printed a computer glitch. There is no message with it, no company name we can track back to. So, how do we enquire to family firstly if they sent it and secondly is it meant to look like this? AIBU to ask if it it art or computer error - what do you think?

I have tried squinting and it's not a Magic Eye, althoughI may try again after a glass of wine tonight, perhaps I'll see something I haven't seen yet. It's not a mat, its a canvas that you normally get photos printed on, about 50cm square.

Was it actually gift wrapped?

IcedVanillaLatte · 17/12/2016 14:04

Can you put out a Facebook message, or some other way of contacting literally everyone you know, with a picture of the thing, saying something like "thanks so much to the mystery giver who sent us this intriguing artwork for [6mo]! We'd love to personally thank whoever sent it" and hope someone gets in touch Grin

Glitch art is a thing apparently.

WheresTheEvidence · 17/12/2016 14:07

Have you tried turning it around and looking from different angles?

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 17/12/2016 14:08

Looks like Minecraft or Terraria or one of those games.

Im sure its not, its just the first thing that came to my head

MeetMeAtMidnight · 17/12/2016 14:25

Google earth shot of your home as suggested by a PP is my guess too. But it is very distorted like the image has been corrupted in processing - maybe it's meant to be though. Odd kind of gift for a baby but perhaps an investment piece that'll be worth millions one day? Put it in a vault! Ok, that's probably reaching.

OutDamnedWind · 17/12/2016 14:28

If you really squint at a distance it almost looks like two people in blue, possibly rain suits - ring any bells in terms of photos?

GlitteryFluff · 17/12/2016 14:34

I agree with Google map but gone wrong at the printers.

BigDamnHero · 17/12/2016 16:04

I really want to find out whether this was some sort of cock up at the printers or some weird 'glitch' art. Please let us know if/when you find out!

PizzaPlease · 17/12/2016 16:50

If you turn it to either side it almost looks like distorted writing.

VladmirsPoutine · 17/12/2016 16:59

I think you are being rather unnecessarily facetious. Your husband comes from a family of artists and they usually gift you a few items of art. It isn't a stretch of the imagination to suspect it was one of them.
You don't like the piece so don't put it up. A lot of 'abstract' art is lost on me but I don't make a song and dance about how ridiculous it is.

KayTee87 · 17/12/2016 17:03

God knows what it is. It's awful, imagine giving that to a baby Confused

waterjungle · 17/12/2016 17:17

VladmirsPoutine

I have just checked with the family and they didn't know anything about it so the mystery deepens......

At least I didn't have to face the embarrassment of having to ask if it was meant to look like that.

Just me that likes it then?

Yours for a SASE, I suspect, tiej!
