to feel a bit shit that they're making me fly alone?

My mum, dad, sister, brother, niece and I are all going to New York for Christmas (can't wait, have never been before!) I admit that they are in much better jobs than me and do have more money. They're all deciding to fly First, I admit, I'm extremely jealous. There is no way in hell could I afford to pay the extra few thousand pounds!! I have tried asking my mum if they could maybe fly with me and they say that I should have saved throughout the year (mainly my brother and sister) but I just don't have enough to save!! Especially just so I can fly first (as lovely as it looks). It means I do the whole airport faff on my own, as they go to a separate bit. It's not that I can't fly alone, but it feels a bit shit. Especially as DC are with their dad this Christmas. BTW, we were all flying economy (which is when they gave me a price and I said I'd love to come) then they upgraded.

Feel a bit crap tbh.

I do sympathise but can you try to be more "glass half full" about it and focus on the fact you are spending Christmas in NYC Xmas Grin It might help you feel more positive about it.

I hope PP are correct and they have secretly paid for an upgrade for you.

bloodyteenagers · 16/12/2016 21:29

Hopefully they will wait whilst she gets through immigration rather than leaving to go to the hotel.

And no I wouldn't ask for a loan either.

december10th · 16/12/2016 21:30

If it were a group of friends then I would say you were BU, but these are your parents!!

SloeGinandTonic · 16/12/2016 21:31

Which hotel are you staying at?

SF25 · 16/12/2016 21:32

Hyatt

NeighTrumpSnort · 16/12/2016 21:35

If they get through security first, will they wait for you?

MsVestibule · 16/12/2016 21:38

I do think it's a bit crap - if they're so wealthy that they can afford to fly first class on something that isn't a 'holiday of a lifetime', they should be able to afford to to pay a quarter each for you. I really cannot imagine going this to a family member.

That said, please don't let it spoil your holiday. Just enjoy a few hours of peace, magazines, books and films. My only concern is spending while you're there. Are they likely to splurge on restaurants etc that you can't afford?

MeetMeAtMidnight · 16/12/2016 21:39

Which Hyatt? They're all nice but on one visit we stayed in the one across the Hudson on the New Jersey side, lovely hotel with panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and you could see the Statue of Liberty downriver. It's right next door to the PATH station too, 15 minutes on the train and you're right in the heart of Manhattan. We bloody loved it.

SF25 · 16/12/2016 21:40

Ms - it's a holiday of a lifetime to me Grin

Devilishpyjamas · 16/12/2016 21:43

Oh that's mean of them. Grab a bunch of books/magazines and enjoy yourself. I wouldn't bother trying to get into the lounge with them tbh.

I hope to god they don't do this to you when you're over there (everything 5 times as expensive as anyone normal can afford). I guess if they do, head off and do the things you can & make sure you enjoy yourself anyway.

BadToTheBone · 16/12/2016 22:08

That's rotten of them TBH, everyone in first class or no one, full stop.

RiceButt · 16/12/2016 22:18

OP, when are flying out? DH and I are also going to NY for Christmas. We can keep you company in economy Grin

user1471458525 · 16/12/2016 22:21

You may be lucky and get upgraded at check in. We flew (3 of us) BA to New York. We'd booked Premier Economy and when we checked in the check in lady said"it looks like your lucky day, you've been upgraded to Club Class"! It was absolutely amazing. Never found out why. So as you are technically traveling alone you may get upped to Premier Economy which is fine

milkshakeandmonstermunch · 16/12/2016 22:23

That's really shit. Surely the trip is about going as a family? I couldn't leave a member of my family out like that.

stargazer2030 · 16/12/2016 22:33

That's crap. I really hope they are paying for am upgrade as a Xmas present. Enjoy your holiday anyway. Yanbu especially as you booked thinking you were all flying economy together. If I was the parent would have been pleased one family could afford it but would have never upgraded if all kids couldn't.

Lunar1 · 16/12/2016 22:40

That's really bloody nasty of them. It would be different if they'd said at booking, but to do it after you have committed to it is just horrible.

Aeroflotgirl · 16/12/2016 22:53

That is really nasty of them. Could your mum and dad put their hands in their deep pockets and upgrade you. Their attitude sucks!

user1481928478 · 16/12/2016 22:54

That's awful Shock I really hope they have upgraded your ticket, as a surprise, for your Christmas present. Surely they can't be that horrible? Some of these comments Hmm

Bluntness100 · 16/12/2016 22:57

Oh cmon, you want them to fly economy because you can't afford higher? It's a few hours, you can still go in the lounge. Tell them to enjoy and meet them at the other end, really is it that big a deal?

user1481928478 · 16/12/2016 23:00

Bluntness100, so you wouldn't care if your family had agreed, but then decided to all upgrade, knowing you couldn't pay?

OP, I think it's obvious that these types of views are in the minority!

ArgyMargy · 16/12/2016 23:07

It's only a few hours - I'd relish the chance to not have to talk to anyone but that's because I'm an introvert. I'd be more worried about what happens when you get there and they insist on going to expensive restaurants etc. You can pay an absolute fortune to get into the trendy clubs in NYC.
