I'm a member of a neighborhood group on facebook (babysitter recommendations, lost dog alerts etc). There are about 4500 members and I do wonder if some have too much time on their hands.
Today someone posted a photo of a Christmas card of a mum and her three children with their first and family names on it. Apparently it had been printed and delivered to someone in the fb group by mistake. This person was trying to see if anyone in our neighborhood knew who the family was (no idea why as they were printed by a national company). The group then located this poor woman by searching her, matching her profile photo and suggesting that she be contacted (at the other end of the USA) so that she would know where her cards had got to.
I suggested they contact the card company so that they can re-print and express mail the cards to the correct customer. I also commented that this mum might not like her name, kids' photos and profile featured on facebook and was told in no uncertain terms to calm down as there was nothing malicious. I'm not going to respond to this but I don't think it's right to post a stranger's information and photos of their dcs online without their permission.
I'm a Brit in a southern state of the USA, maybe this is a cultural thing, do we only protect the privacy of minors in the UK? I post the odd picture of my dcs on fb but not of other kids.
