Itsnotmyday I'm a carer too! Was hoping we would get mentioned! I've just been told I have to miss my sons second Christmas because nobody else will do it so I don't have a choice. Very upset but it's part of the job.

myfavouritecolourispurple it might seem a horrible job but I absolutely love it 95% of the time (it can be very stressful and emotional for minimum wage). We get to make a real difference and form really close bonds with our residents.

NecklessMumster · 16/12/2016 09:31

Another vote for care workers...I'm an adult care social worker and work a lot with care workers, they do a difficult job in some yucky conditions at times.
Also the council workers who volunteer and train to be emergency workers in the event of disasters/ floods etc in their own time

parumpapumpuuum · 16/12/2016 09:47

HMRC tax inspectors.

You want good schools and good hospitals?

These are the people who tirelessly pursue tax avoiders and evaders to ensure your public services are run properly.

DierdrePewtey · 16/12/2016 11:04

Bankers - you want to borrow money for a mortgage, or you want industry to be financed - you need bankers

MimsyFluff · 16/12/2016 11:45

Farmers and farm workers. They harvest from dawn and still going at 11pm or longer.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/12/2016 11:56

Retail workers. They not only have to deal with the general public's shit arse attitude towards them in real life, they get to see it online too with people blithely inferring "they only do it because they can't do anything else" and so on.

Graphista · 16/12/2016 12:00

I want more tax inspectors! Get em going after the likes of Philip green and Starbucks etc! Agree they don't get the credit they should - ditto auditors - catching big fraudsters out and bringing them to book

GP receptionist. They get absolutely crucified on here and I've had a terrible one but at my GPs now they are absolutely lovely and do their job very well. I definitely didn't mind them asking "what's it about?" when an appointment that would have been a month away became a next-day appointment as soon as they found out it was regarding a lump. Always friendly and polite.

Starbucks baristas. They get a bad rep for being miserable and sulky but (this is very outing to anyone who knows me) our local baristas were absolute angels last weekend, I can't thank them enough - they went above and beyond when DD fell over and hurt herself badly, we took in a box of chocs and a card to thank them and wrote to their head office because they were incredible. Always polite and friendly when we go in.

HOHOHOvariesBeforeBrovaries · 16/12/2016 12:10

Oh and lawyers. Never had direct dealings with one as a client but many as a PA. A couple of dickheads but the vast majority are lovely, friendly, funny people who treated us with so much respect and gratitude.

dragongirlx · 16/12/2016 12:41

Anyone who works in homeless services. They do a hard job trying to get vulnerable people into accomodation and get them the support they need yet have to deal with abuse on a daily basis and a substantial lack of resources.

Also traffic wardens, receptionists and people who work in retail

intheknickersoftime · 16/12/2016 13:01

Hoho, I've just started working at a GP practice. I take telephone calls and deal with all the incoming admin. I appreciate your post because asking a patient if it's urgent is just part and parcel of what we have to do. Same day appointments are there for things that require urgent attention. Also we release emergency appointments for the afternoon later in the day and we have to ask patients to ring back. We will always try and get you in as early as we can. It just might not be convenient and we don't always have scope to move things around. Basically it's impossible to please everyone! But my God it's been an eye opener for me to do this and see just how hard everyone works. I've never worked in an organisation before where everyone has been so committed to helping others and the purpose of the organisation.

Alabastard · 16/12/2016 13:27

Social Workers.

In the throes of PND and having just been left by my husband a social worker gave me all the support I needed. It was very brief involvement (triggered by the crisis team) but at no point did I feel like she was against me.

Don't know where I'd be without her.

Oddbins · 16/12/2016 13:46

I was going to post about my job but someone had already mentioned it. It's fair made my day to see it so thank you :)

FizzBombBathTime · 16/12/2016 14:27

I went to get forms to register at our new GP today

The receptionist lady was an absolute diamond! So polite and kind

joblot1 · 16/12/2016 16:07

I work for the environment agency. Every flood we are told we aren't doing enough and the fire service are amazing. There are loads of them and they rescue people, so are visible. There are a lot less of us and we stop doing our day jobs and pull together to man incident rooms. We work out where will flood next, when the water will go up and come down, operate structures too early the water, man the phone lines etc all in addition to our normal jobs. After the water is gone we have to work manically catching up with all the work we had on hold during the flood. This is all fine but, when I am driving home after a night shift, I really don't need to hear how the EA are crap, moral is crushed every time and people do actually leave because of it.

paulapantsdown · 16/12/2016 19:04

Thank you to those who have said school receptionists. We sometimes have to remind each other in my job that the lovely kids make up for the occasional awful parent!

We are among the lowest paid and least appreciated in our school, but not as much as the TA's, who do an amazing job. They get paid a pittance, yet they are the ones who know your SEN child better that the subject teachers ever will, because they are with them more often. In our school they go above and beyond, and really really make a difference. Come parents evening though, no one asks the TA who has been in 20 out of 25 lessons a week with a pupil, what they think, it's always the teacher.
