Yesterday at school attendance letters were handed to the children whose attendance has been deemed too low. They're on bright red paper, not in envelopes and the letter states we are receiving a red letter due to low attendance. The letters are handed out in front of all the other children who asked about what they were.

For information this is a brand new HT and a bit of a new broom. This has never appended before. Dd has low attendance at this point in the year for various reasons, which I am happy to explain if anyone cares to know but am not sure it's necessary. It's the purposeful public shaming bright red stationary I have an issue with.

Can you imagine if you had a health issue and your boss handed you a big red warning letter in from of your colleagues because you'd had more than a certain number of sick days. Some people wouldn't care but I'd be mortified. I never know why we expect children to be fine with things we;d never accept as adults.

I agree OP. I think classes of kids get treated like a heard of bloody cattle sometimes.

Imagine if this was in an adult work situation? OK for the boss to hand out red letters about personal issues in front of all the colleagues? No!

I know this comparison can't work for every situation in a school - kids aren't adults - but it's not rocket science to work out that some kids might find being singled out for red letter waving a bit upsetting.
