Chicken pox has been doing the rounds at my dc's school for the last month. I thought they'd advoided it but last night they came home with a few suspicious red spots on their bellies/face.

This morning eldest one has literally just a handful of spots-probably half a dozen and a couple of them have like a fluid filled top. Youngest has about a dozen but they are red, slightly raised but no fluid blister things as of yet.

Is it possible to have chicken pox but have so few spots? I will take them to pharmacy when it opens to ask them but I have two heartbroken children this morning at the thought of missing their school concerts and the rest of the week and i really don't know if they are pox or not.

My dd was diagnosed with chicken pox and she had ONE spot. This was many years ago though and looking back i was a bit Hmm Have they been unwell?

NickNacks · 13/12/2016 07:20

You'll probably find they get more over the coming hours. They don't all come up at the same time.

Please don't take them to the pharmacy and expose the virus to more people.

It will def be chicken pox, more will appear daily, sorry! They might not get it too bad tho, me and my dd had to miss a holiday this year because of chicken pox u have my sympathies . But yes a few children only get a couple of spots, it's possible.

Muddlingthroughtoo · 13/12/2016 07:20

My DD had 10-15 spots, it barely affected her.

They've been a bit off colour for weeks, eldest had full blown flu and youngest with ear infection however other than tired and a bit stuffy they've been relatively okay this last week. I think I'm going to have to get to go to the pharmacy as it opens as I'm really unsure Confused

Sorry x-posted so they take a while to come out? Okay I think I'll swing on the side of caution then, thank you everyone...better break the news to them. Bless them!

Unfortunately yes, I had very few when I got it as a kid, and so did my eldest (tho his little sis was covered head to foot). What a shame, it's possible it's something else so worth checking with doc, but looks v likely it's chicken pox. Surgery may want to know what u suspect so can keep them away from elderly patients (who I believe can suffer particularly badly with shingles from same virus)

Please don't take them to a pharmacy where you will be exposing other people, and potentially immune compromised people.

Schools finished early for them this term!
Ds1 had 3 spots which were just scabbing over, I thought we were nearly through it when he erupted.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 13/12/2016 07:59

I'm pretty confident mine had chicken pox when they were younger but as they only had about 15 spots and weren't too poorly (mild cold type symptoms) I'm still not sure.

The doctor said without a blood test he couldn't know either. He said if they get it again, it wasn't chicken pox, if they don't, then it was chicken pox the first time.

10 years on, they haven't had it again so I can only assume the first time was indeed chicken pox and they got off lightly.

HardLightHologram · 13/12/2016 08:03

I wouldn't have known ds1 had it if dd hadn't at the same time. She was covered (in her mouth and in her bits as wellSad) but he had about three spots.

Today 07:52 zaalitje

Unfortunately I had to collect my medication today as run out this pm so not going wasn't an option, dc's waited in car until I'd checked it was okay to take them in. Pharmacist confirmed eldest has chicken pox and said she's 80% sure youngest does too. Advised me to stock up on calpol and antihistamine though which I've done. She said they may get more spots over the next few days but may not-I never realised you could get it and have so few spots. Thanks for the comments everyone, they don't even look that much like the pictures on the nhs site so glad I asked.
