to not pay for my kitchen installation when it's not complete?

On Monday last week I took delivery of my new kitchen and appliances in a number of boxes, all of which were paid for in advance.
The fitters arrived on Tuesday and started installing the units, they didn't come Wednesday but they finished the installation on Thursday. Everything except the dishwasher was fitted as unfortunately it transpired that it hadn't been delivered. I had no idea as I didn't check the boxes when they came.
Not a problem at all, as I was told by the kitchen company that they're chasing it up and on Friday he told me he was still awaiting a delivery date. The fitter would be over to install in straight away.
The kitchen guy then asked me to settle the kitchen fitter's bill. I am reluctant to pay it as the job isn't finished. If I pay the bill, there's no incentive for them to chase the dishwasher.
Am I being unreasonable? Should I pay it? Pay some of it?
Surely if the dishwasher is going to be delivered this week then he can wait a couple of days for the money? If not, why can't the kitchen guy sub him? It's not my fault the dishwasher hasn't been delivered but it feels like if I pay, then that's it, I've got no recourse at all.
Can anyone advise me?
I struggle a bit with anxiety and I worry about things like this. I have a tendency to takes things personally and I know the the kitchen guy will persuade me to pay if i talk to him as he's quite a sales person.

Fair point about checking the delivery but to be fair, there were 30+ boxes & the way they were stacked meant they weren't easily accessible. I said to the delivery guys that i was concerned that I couldn't check the boxes & they advised me to write "unchecked" on the slip. Which I did. I probably should have been more thorough.

To miss such a sizeable item is quite a miss & as previous poster stated they probably could have got it to you so the job could be finished.

The delay is in no way down to the fitter

I hear you, but I've learned from bitter experience to check and double check! Signing as unchecked is all very well in terms of damage, but doesn't help when it comes to missing or wrong items. 😕
