Starting to panic about climate change

DorothyL · 12/12/2016 17:30

I keep reading how climate change is getting really bad and how we're reaching the tipping point/point of no return. It keeps me awake at night and makes me feel so anxious and worried for my children. I struggle to feel happy because I keep thinking that we're literally facing the apocalypse. How can I deal with this? Sad

Don't forget, the climate has changes for millions of years due to natural causes, they did not suddenly stop in 1950.

No, they didn't stop, but that's not to say that human activity hasn't had an effect, indeed a substancial effect.
Temperatures are rising faster than recorded before due to natural causes.
Regardless, we have a civilization that is quite settled, with huge cities and permanent structures. The main question is whether we can adapt without major upheaval. In particular without wars or huge migrations or hunger.
As a species we will probably survive climate change. But at what price?

myoriginal3 · 13/12/2016 20:25

It's bad when it's the scientists predicting the end of the world. as they have always done

Hmm
Manumission · 13/12/2016 20:26

Are you okay OP?

madnessdescending · 13/12/2016 20:28

I think that at this stage we should just ignore the climate change deniers. The argument was won long ago, for all those who actually care about the truth.

wetcardboard · 13/12/2016 20:31

I agree the deniers should be ignored. Their view is a fringe view as far as the scientific consensus is concerned.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 20:31

Lweji
human activity has had an effect, I agree. whether its substantial or not, we just don't know.
Temperatures are not rising faster than ever before, how could you know that?
You talk about adaption, that is the most sensible thing I have heard in years. Most alarmists are not talking about adaption, they are talking about prevention.
They want to prevent something that may not be happening by taxing us all into oblivion. They want to control the weather with wind farms and by preventing us from flying or having a comfortable life.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 20:33

climate change deniers? really?
your only response is to call people names?

you have nothing else?
no evidence?

DorothyL · 13/12/2016 20:33

I'm still reading, head in amuddle

'Controlling the weather with wind farms'

You do realise it's not -

Oh dear.

You don't, do you.

Manumission · 13/12/2016 20:34

How do you feel about about seeing the GP?

cauliflowercheese14 · 13/12/2016 20:37

undercrackers5 I am boggling at your ignorance. There is fuckloads of evidence for human caused climate change. It's amazing that you can spout this stuff.

dorothyL I identify very closely with your feelings. I get annoyed with people saying I have anxiety as I believe my anxiety is well founded and everybody needs to realize what is happening and do something.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 20:41

cauliflower, considering I accepted some human influence, I would suggest its not me that's being ignorant.
Its the scale that is the issue.
do you understand?

Manumission · 13/12/2016 20:42

Nobody needs to suffer anxiety so severe that they wake up nauseous cauliflower.

BroadBeanSlippers · 13/12/2016 20:57

"Controlling the weather with wind farms" Grin

You see, when you say stuff like that it rather detracts from the credibility of anything you have to say.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 21:01

well braodbeanslippers , that's a bit daft when you consider that windfarms are subsidised to replace fossil fuelled power stations in order to reduce CO2 in order to mitigate anthropogenic global warming.

Lweji · 13/12/2016 21:11

Temperatures are not rising faster than ever before, how could you know that?

I wrote "faster than recorded", not ever.
Expert scientists know that and have shared their data.

Lweji · 13/12/2016 21:14

windfarms are subsidised to replace fossil fuelled power stations in order to reduce CO2 in order to mitigate anthropogenic global warming.

Windfarms are one option for renewable energy. They don't exist for the sole purpose of reducing CO2. Renewable energy is sought and improved to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, which are eventually running out and are in the hands of a few countries.

exLtEveDallas · 13/12/2016 21:16

So what is the term for a person that doesn't deny climate change, but isn't that concerned about it?

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 21:17

Lweji, I have a question for you.

the day you were born, if your dad had taken the temperature and put it on your birth certificate, would you believe him?

If someone came along years later and corrected it, would you accept it?
and if they came along for the next 20 years and kept on correcting it?

based on a computer program?

I would rather accept the actual measurement

Lweji · 13/12/2016 21:18

You talk about adaption, that is the most sensible thing I have heard in years. Most alarmists are not talking about adaption, they are talking about prevention.

Actually, they're talking about both.
It's estimated that there's a 20 year delay between rise in greenhouse gases and temperature increase.
We need to adapt as best as we can AND prevent furthe rises as best as we can.

The problem with adaptation is that it may not be enough or fast enough. That was the point of my post. We can adapt, but at a huge cost, including of lives.

Lweji · 13/12/2016 21:20

UnderCrackers5

Are you implying that people have been falsifying temperature measurements?
Not sure where you're getting at.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 21:24

ExLtDallas
everyone accepts climate change. This morning, when I got up , it was 4c.
a few hours later it was 15c, now its back down again.

Somehow, I survived. unlike the poor polar bears, who will die if it changes by 1 degree.

I would call a person who can accept this massive range...normal

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 21:27

Lweji, its clear what I am saying.

The temperature the day you were born, as recorded by your father, will never change. ever

the temperature the day you were born, as published by the global warming industry, will change day by day

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2016 21:30

Lweji
again you are wrong about the relationship. sorry.
The ice cores show that temperatures lead CO2 by about 800 years.

i.e. if you believe in the relationship, temperature drives CO2
not the other way around

BroadBeanSlippers · 13/12/2016 21:35

OK, that actually shows you don't even know what climate change is! Can you just google it quickly, please?
