Update - My 12 year old daughter shouldn't be subjected to sexism at school

Hi,

I posted a thread on here a few weeks back about the frequent sexism and sexualised language/behaviour my daughter was subjected to on a regular basis at secondary school.

Here's an update -

I contacted several other mum's I know and their responses were that yes their daughters get it too but that's life and they have to get used to it (??!) So, the plan to go in to school as a group of concerned parents wasn't an option!

I contacted several organisations who work with schools on equality issues and found one who provide free workshops in schools on issues of sexism/gender inequality.

Today we went into school and they were very interested to hear our views. We'd emailed them prior to the meeting with a brief outline of our concerns and they'd spoken to several pupils about their experiences before the meeting. They were shocked to hear how prevalent the casual misogyny is in the school.

They are going to contact the organisation who do the workshops with a view to getting them in and also have a think about what else they can do in school to improve the situation.

The school thanked us for bringing the matter to their attention and seemed genuinely shocked about what was going on amongst pupils.

So ..... a success I think!

Thanks to all of you who posted on my original thread, it was very helpful to hear of your views and experiences and fortified my determination to tackle school.

Well done that mother!

You've made an important difference, OP - good for you!

MagicMary1 · 12/12/2016 16:54

Well done.

TheProblemOfSusan · 12/12/2016 16:56

Well done, that's a really bloody great outcome. Can you share the name of the workshop company in case it's helpful to others?

redexpat · 12/12/2016 16:59

Hoorah! So pleased to hear that. Good job the school were willing to listen. Not all schools are like that.

Willow2016 · 12/12/2016 17:11

Wow, well done for not giving up at the first hurdle. Your daughter must be so proud of her mum Xmas Smile

Good for the school too for finaly recognising the problem and dealing with it.

Hope things change very soon for your daughter and all the other girls at the school.

Girl Guiding UK is currently pushing hard on this sort of thing, unfortunately not getting much of a positive reaction from the government "yes something should be done, no we'are not going to do it" more or less sums it up

crispandcheesesandwichplease · 12/12/2016 17:35

Yes the Government are ignoring the issue despite the many organisations and committees telling them otherwise. Despicable, they wouldn't get away with this with any significant minority group but seem to think it's fine to ignore the needs of 50% of the population.

Well done OP.

I remember the awful sexism and sexual harassment from my senior school. It was so depressing.

Leeds2 · 12/12/2016 18:22

Well Done! Do keep us updated, and let us know if the school follows through with something positive. I hope they do.

mudandmayhem01 · 12/12/2016 18:32

I have taken a stand too, I reported some of the vile comments being made to daughter and her friend. The male head of year took it very seriously and has spoken to the boys and their parents. My DD hasn't reported any further incidents so hopefully this has had some effect. I am proud of DD for knowing it was wrong and telling me rather than just accepting as normal as I did at school.

EmeliaHerveyHenryFitzroy · 12/12/2016 18:36

That's bloody brilliant news, OP.

Well done!

Susan the organisation offering the workshops are UKfeminista. They are also involved in research alongside the NUT and the University of Warwick into sexism in schools.

mud well done to your daughter and her friend, and you of course for taking it into school.
