Sandwich and fruit

I fear I overreacted this morning. DS (5) keeps bringing home his packed lunch with the fruit still in there, even if it's his favourite. So today I sent him with just a sandwich and fruit. He has an egg wrap, an apple, a banana, some strawberries, a mixed bowl of raspberries and blueberries and a packet of raisins. Wasn't my finest moment was it??

We usually do fruit as a first course of breakfast here and then some for an afternoon snack. Could that work for an after school snack?

On the days 3you has nursery I only send her with a one slice of bread sandwiche and one or two pieces of fruit as we get up late so usually only have time for a one course breakfast. She rarely manages to eat that and so I refuse to put treats in! Not that she has asked yet.

How long does the school take for lunch? Just a though but my local used to be an hour then switched to 45 mins and around the same thing dc stopped eating all their lunch. Turns out they don't really have enough time to eat it all and fit in a short while to play! Maybe that's why he's not finishing it?

In my experience fruit just doesn't travel well and is warm and sweaty by lunchtime. The dds love fruit usually but don't eat much if its in their packed lunch.

I would give a portion before school and a portion after school, then lots of veg with tea.

I feel your pain. Neither for my 2 DS (10 and 8) will have anything more than a pepperami and some cherry tomatoes or chopped pepper for their lunch. It stresses the life out of me, but they wont touch bread or cold rice, pasta etc. My Mum tells me they're not failing, so don't worry, but I bloody well do.

Does he have to have fruit in his lunch? Maybe he just doesn't want to eat it at school

Give him a piece of fruit with his breakfast and leave it out of his lunch box

Fruit is not nice after sitting around in a warm classroom for hours.

To keep you all in the loop he has eaten the lot!! Wasn't my intention but makes a good compromise easier for tomorrow. I think I'll lessen the amount of food I give in general and only one piece of fruit, which is a requirement. Back to an afternoon snack it is (probably at the cost of dinner)!

I just gave up giving ds fruit and make sure he has a piece every dinner for pudding. Either I chopped it up then he wouldn't eat it if it went brown, or it was too much effort to peel himself so he didn't eat it. Fruit isn't compulsory in a packed lunch. I realised I was putting the fruit in to appear like a good mum, not because I thought he would eat it!

polkadotsrock · 12/12/2016 17:10

At least one piece is compulsory at our school, that's for the morning break as far as I can fathom

My daughter just won't eat fruit or veg...so I juice beets, apples, carrots, spinach and all sorts of good stuff everyday that is on offer! At least this way I know she has consumed fruit and veg. I wouldn't put all that in her lunch box...it's a waste of money! I just send 1 piece of fruit.
