Christmas lights

Have always had very subtle outside lights at Xmas. One strand, yes they do flash. Positioned on low branches of a cherry tree in front garden. There is a barrier of conifers between my house and next door, so their view of lights is obstructed. They have icicle lights across front of their house and around a conifer. Our lights are always switched off by 10pm. Neighbour came around yesterday to say that our flashing lights keep her awake. Apparently, they creep under her curtain. My husband commented that we switch them off at night, but apparently she goes to bed at 8.30pm.She is renowned for petty complaints amongst the neighbours. I have always managed to escape her complaints. Shall I just leave them off?

What time does she turn her lights off?

Wolverbamptonwanderer · 11/12/2016 21:08

I'd be tempted to leave them on to wind her up.

GetOutMyCar · 11/12/2016 21:08

Ignore her, she's being ridiculous.

pklme · 11/12/2016 21:09

I'd quietly ignore her, I think. If she raises it again say it's just for a few weeks, and has she thought about getting better fitting curtains?

harderandharder2breathe · 11/12/2016 21:13

Ignore, 10pm is a reasonable time

I would be more sympathetic if it was a toddler they were disturbing or if there wasn't a barrier of trees between the lights and her window!

tinyterrors · 11/12/2016 22:54

Ignore it. It's a few flashing lights which can't be that bright and they're off at 10pm (a perfectly reasonable time). It's not like it's pounding music.

She'd hate living where I do. There are several houses that are completely covered in lights, along with the gardens, and the lights are flashing away as I type.

GladAllOver · 11/12/2016 22:58

Tell her to close her eyes. It will help her to sleep :)

AutumnalLeaves38 · 11/12/2016 23:18

I'd suggest she Mrs Grinch treats herself to an early Xmas present...

She sounds bonkers. How come her own lights don't cause a problem but yours do? Confused Perhaps as a compromise in the interests of keeping good relations, turn the flashing function off and just have them on constant as maybe that would be less intrusive to her? She needs better curtains though!

QueenMortificado · 11/12/2016 23:26

What's the point of having lights outside your house? You don't get to see them, so they're only for the benefit of other people

So if, instead of it being a nice thing, it is disturbing someone else then I'd turn them off, personally

OpalTree · 11/12/2016 23:58

If it's disturbing her then I'd either turn the flashing off or replace them with non flashing ones.

Rainbunny · 12/12/2016 00:00

Well YABU except that flashing lights are a bif naff imo (sorry just a personal opinion).

IMissGrannyW · 12/12/2016 00:00

only 15 more days to go.....

MrsBlennerhassett · 12/12/2016 00:02

lol just say 'im so very sorry' and carry on as you have been. She sounds utterly loops.

Tokelau · 12/12/2016 00:03

Could you just stop them flashing and leave them on?

I do have sympathy for her as flashing lights really affect me and cause migraines. I can even see lights flashing with my eyes shut. I must have very thin eyelids!

Fi61wales · 12/12/2016 09:24

Thanks for all the comments. Have decided to leave them off for the time being.........as I am a reasonable person. Away on hols in a few days........may just forget to turn them off before I go (fwink)

I'd leave them on but turn off the flashing.

My neighbour across the road asked all of us (our whole street decorates with lights) if we would mind not using flashing lights as her DS has been diagnosed with photosensitive epilepsy. We've all agree, because we aren't dicks.

HaveNoSocks · 12/12/2016 09:33

Bloody hell, I'm hyper conscious about not annoying my neighbours but flashing lights that get turned off at 10pm is fine. (Unless she actually has a medical condition).

SylvesterTheCat · 11/12/2017 10:36

I can't take credit for the pic but can I suggest these beauties?
