To change internet provider without dh agreement

Incaseofemergencybreakglass · 11/12/2016 20:38

Our internet wifi hasn't worked well for a long, long time. The wifi doesn't reach well to all devices and more distant rooms and it constantly stutters and stops working for my wireless devices and kids as well. But it works perfectly for the wired connection that dh uses.

I have said enough is enough and I am changing internet provider tomorrow to one that I think will be better. dh wants to keep old provider as he thinks it will be faster speed for his gaming. He says if I go ahead then this gives him carte blanche to sign up for anything and everything he wants without my agreement - credit cards, purchases etc etc.

I've said we can change back if it doesn't work out but would have penalty for doing so. Only other option I can think of is to have two internet connections which seems ridiculous.

AIBU?

I would look at improving your wifi connection before changing isps. Have a look for signal extenders or try running a router into another room.

DierdrePewtey · 11/12/2016 20:42

Wifi issues have nothing to do with your provider. You need repeaters through the house se

golfbuggy · 11/12/2016 20:46

As others say. If the internet and speed is fine for a wired connection then switching ISP will make not a jot of difference. You have a WIFI problem, not a ISP problem.

titchy · 11/12/2016 20:47

If a wired connection works then the fault isn't with your internet provider. It's either a dodgy router (virgin by any chance?), or your wireless devices aren't working properly.

Buy a wifi extender for hard to reach rooms.

New route and wifi extender will be less than £100.

Having said that your dh is a petulant arse threatening to go on a spending spree...

eyebrowsonfleek · 11/12/2016 20:49

I have a WiFi extender so that everybody here can get Internet. (Sky is our ISP)

Scrowy · 11/12/2016 20:57

Yep I have wifi extenders throughout our extremely old farmhouse with 2ft thick walls. Without them the wifi would only reach the room the router is immediately adjacent to.

Is there any chance the wifi seems to struggle more at the same time your husband is using the wired connection for gaming?

QueenMortifauxcado · 11/12/2016 21:00

It's probably the router/settings. Try changing the wireless channels, should help with the drops. If your router is an older model then getting an upgrade might help.

OnionKnight · 11/12/2016 21:02

You need a wifi extender, if you switch ISP you'll still have the same problem.

DoublyTroubly · 11/12/2016 21:05

Also, make sure that you don't have anything "clashing" with the wifi network. Our wifi suddenly got worse and it turned out that the baby monitor was badly affecting it!

maras2 · 11/12/2016 21:12

Never mind about the WIFI.How childish is he with his silly ultimatums? Shock

Incaseofemergencybreakglass · 11/12/2016 21:34

Thanks for the responses. Yes, Titchy, it's Virgin and they won't give us a Superhub 3 although not sure that would make much difference. We've tried some extenders already so maybe need to try some more. The provider I was thinking of switching to was BT as they say their hub is better than the others for reaching more rooms and appear to have some evidence to back this up...

get the power cable extenders - they work very well.

PurpleMcPants · 11/12/2016 21:41

Have you tried powerline adaptors rather than wifi boosters? They use your electrical wiring to extend your network and it comes out the other end with no loss of power (or something technical!). We have 4 or 5 of them throughout our house, range extenders wouldn't cut it here (another old place with 2 ft thick stone walls). They are more expensive than range extenders if you need to buy wireless ones, the ones we have are about £60/70 for the starter kit.
And your DH is behaving like an entitled arsehole. Just as long as he's alright, eh?!

OnionKnight · 11/12/2016 21:46

Powerline Adaptors are the bees knees, I run a wired one and it is so much faster than wifi.

titchy · 11/12/2016 21:47

Buy a new, decent quality router with decent range. Use the virgin super hub as a modem. Sorted our dodgy wifi out!

As a pp suggested power line adapter are another alternative.

Trouble is I don't think any other provider is as quick as VM are.

whyohwhy000 · 11/12/2016 21:59

titchy None of the main ones are faster, but there are some lesser known ones who use fibre to the home instead of fibre to the cabinet. We use See The Light whom we were forced to use by the developer.

downwardfacingdog · 11/12/2016 22:25

We have the crappy VM router too, but got a TP link powerline and it's made a big difference.

Incaseofemergencybreakglass · 11/12/2016 23:06

Thank you very much for the advice - I really appreciate this :)

Powerline adaptors didn't work for us at home due to the layout and config of our wiring I think - router is in a room which is a garage conversion and the signal just doesn't travel. We've used them successfully in our business premises though.

We ended up having to run an ethernet cable from our VM hub, round the outside and up to the opposite corner of the house then plugging in a second router to that. Works very well now, but a bit of a pita to set up!

Hellmouth · 11/12/2016 23:55

try changing the wifi channel. Many networks in your area, including non virgin, might be using the same wifi channel, which will clog things up.

Make sure your router is not near any electronic devices, or surrounded by items as this could actually lower the signal.

Try a wifi extender.

Virgin is one of the best and fastest out there so I wouldn't want to cancel.
