To think the NHS should tell us the cost of medication

Just been talking to / whining at DH about how I need to order a new inhalor before Christmas but my app won't let me before 25 Dec. Then got onto the cost of prescriptions and wasted medication (I know, bet you wish you were here!)

Out of interest I googled the cost of my inhalor and the one my doctor tried to switch me too (can't use dry powder as it makes my asthma worse for some reason).

My symbicort costs about £38 and my salbutamol £12 to buy. Suddenly i feel better about prescription charges (still annoying that some parts of the UK don't pay or certain conditions get all meds free others dont, bit that's a different thread).

Anyways, after all that waffle, AIBU to think we should be told how much it would cost us to buy medication? I'd be more appreciative of the savings / consider how much I need it and would be less likely to waste medication.

I just looked up my medication. £2.80 per pack. It is prescription only. I pay £8.40 per item so they are making a profit.

"They" are making a profit? Do you mean the pharmacist? Or the prescriber? Or the manufacturer? Or the licence holder?

It is rather more complicated than comparing the list price of a drug against the current prescription charge.

Had to buy asthma medication for the pharmacist for my asthmatic cat. The pharmacist kindly sold it at cost price plus just 10%. Even so, I almost needed the medication myself when he said the price the first time. The ventalin was ok but the steroid was very expensive. Certainly made me think about how much I save using prescription drugs.

This thread exists though.

Most people are saying they appreciate it. I couldn't afford half my drugs this month if they were cost price I reckon. Although I am still put out by no one telling me I could get the years worth on a DD for £10 a month unlimited items until I had already paid for some of them!

I think for the first time I might get a spare Inhaler!

How does a cat take asthma meds? My mums took steroids. I can't imagine them puffing on salbutamol?!

I dont get why they arent publicised more

The DD is over 10 months too not 12. So it makes it £100 a year.

As someone on multiple medications for chronic illnesses, it's really not going to help me to know how much they cost. I appreciate it because I need it, it's hardly like meds are a luxury.
Although I was happy when my pharmacist told me that one of the medications I wanted was actually available and cheaper to buy over the counter.
