Aibu to return to sender

Last week a neighbour came round to say she accidentally used our address for her driving licence. She'd phoned the dvla but they'd already sent it out. She asked me to pass it on to her and she'd send it back to change the address.

A bit later that day I realised we did have some post that felt like it had a card in from the dvla (we often get mail for several recipients who no longer live here- junk mail, catalogues, car insurance renewal type things so I didn't think much of it). I think I should just return to sender as I usually do, as how will I know that she does change the address. What are the implications for me if she kept it as my address?

I'd be sending it back. Your address has been used so really you need to keep control of the situation. Is there anyone else in the household? You could always say it's already been returned before you had a chance to tell your family.

CrohnicallyPregnant · 11/12/2016 07:48

Sounds dodgy, I don't think I've ever accidentally used a neighbour's address for anything before! Old addresses or family addresses, yes, but a neighbour's?

CherryLips1980 · 11/12/2016 07:49

How do you accidentally put someone elses address for anything, let alone a driving license?! Send it back, OP

ShowMePotatoSalad · 11/12/2016 07:50

Oh definitely send it back to the DVLA.

Just tell her "Sorry DH had already sent it back" and then you are sorted.

If it happens again I'd be phoning the DVLA and reporting it.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 11/12/2016 07:53

In fact, I think you need to phone them anyway. Your address will now be linked with her license so just returning the letter might not be enough.

What a pain for you OP. And call me cynical but it seems a bit dodgy to me.

insancerre · 11/12/2016 07:54

It is easy to accidentally use a neighbours address if you share a poistcode
When the drop down box comes on it is easy to click on the wrong address

I would still send it back to the dvla with not known at this address written on the envelope

pinkieandperkie · 11/12/2016 07:55

Yes I would phone the DVLA, good luck with that they are a nightmare to get hold of.

Bohemond · 11/12/2016 07:58

If she had accidentally done it on the drop down box how would she know? Do they send an e mail?
Sounds dodgy so I would return and call.

TalkingSheds · 11/12/2016 07:58

As others have said, just return to sender, and tell your neighbour it must've been sent out pretty sharp as you've already returned it without realising it as you get a fair bit of mail that's not yours.

AtiaoftheJulii · 11/12/2016 08:00

Yes, return. I wouldn't want someone else having something that said my address was theirs. Although I wouldn't want to not trust her, I'd rather be a bit suspicious than end up in a bad situation somehow.

im sure there's a £1000 fine for not having the right Address on your DL. Send it back, you're doing them a favour.

JoeyJoeJoeJuniorShabadu · 11/12/2016 08:22

Sounds very dodgy indeed.
Sent it back.
Don't enable her.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 11/12/2016 08:33

YANBU

I think you still apply/change details on a paper form don't you? So how can you accidentally put in the wrong address but know about it before it (doesn't) turn up? When I changed my address it was still paper form and no confirmation, just a new one in the post.

Sounds dodgy af to me, and not worth risking fraud for the sake of protecting a neighbourly type friendship. "Oops DP had already sent it back" would suffice I think!

mya83 · 11/12/2016 09:46

.

fluttershyby · 11/12/2016 10:02

Send it back.
It happened to me when I moved. I used the old paper form, I did put my right address on it but the dvla read the house number wrong. I only noticed because I hadn't received it after a month and when I called them up it became clear what happened.
My license was returned by the neighbour to dvla. They immediately reprinted with right address and I had it a week later.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 11/12/2016 10:33

It sounds potentially dodgy. Send it back.

ShadowMane · 11/12/2016 10:41

Why the . ?

Are you the neighbour following? Op how old is your neighbour early 30s?

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 11/12/2016 10:51

Yikes, send it back and make sure you phone or email the DVLA to explain that this has happened.

NOBODY would put their neighbour's address down accidentally, she's trying it on. She could take out loans and you will end up with the bailiffs knocking on your door.

sandragreen · 11/12/2016 10:55

Definitely send it back. If it's innocent then you have saved neighbour the bother of sending it and you know it's done.

If it's a potential scam then you have saved yourself a whole heap of trouble.

HaveNoSocks · 11/12/2016 12:28

Definitely send it back. Maybe it's an innocent mistake in which case sending it back won't be a problem, she can just fill in the form and get a new license.

kali110 · 11/12/2016 13:35

It could be innocemt.
As someone said if you have the same postcode it's easy to click the wrong house number.
If she's simply renewed her licence you can do it online without paper.

CrohnicallyPregnant · 11/12/2016 13:46

But if it was a mistake clicking the wrong house online, either she would have realised straight away if she got a confirmation email or something (in which case it wouldn't have been posted out yet and DVLA could have helped her) or she has no idea she got it wrong (in which case how would she know to speak to OP about it?)

girlelephant · 11/12/2016 13:53

If you hand this over to her she will have identification that also provides address verification for your address.

I find it hard to believe she could have done this accidentally, if so why we she not have changed the form?

She could be doing this to commit fraud as DLs provide a gateway to bank accounts, credit cards, GP surgery registration, electoral roll changes... the list is endless. If you hand this over to her you have no idea what it will be used for and no guarantee that she will have it changed.

Please return to the DVLA stating your neighbour does not live here. I would also openly tell her I've done. Or if you're not confrontational you could deny having received it.

I do not believe this is an accident
