To buy a really fancy car?

Dh and I celebrate our 25th anniversary next year. First 10 years or so we were broke but things have improved due to a combination of hard work, good luck and continuing to live frugally despite improving circumstances - we almost didn't realise we'd started to become better off. No debts and good savings.

In recent years we've had newish standard family cars, perfectly functional and presentable. We live in a house that suits our needs in the nicer part of a rough town. I think most people in our position would use the money to move, but we don't have any great desire to.

The car we have in mind is probably three times as much as we've ever spent before and would be the "best" car in the street by far - I think this is where my uncertainty stems from, I'm concerned it would seem unbearably flash and/or draw attention to us as a target for criminals.

Anyway we're thinking of buying ourselves a very nice anniversary present. Would you?

Oh, should say neither of us drive much! Dh commutes by train and I work 3 miles away, so it would only be used weekends and holidays (which Di usually involve driving). We'd pay cash for the car

If you're not really 'drivers' I wouldn't. We bought a flash car and I love it. But I love driving so it's something special to me.

Research says that experiences buy more happiness than things so I would have a holiday or something like that.

PrettySophisticated · 10/12/2016 20:46

We like driving and cover a lot of miles on holidays (which usually involve mountains) but don't use the car much in a working week.

It's not a range rover, but similar in style and price - can't have a sports car, as still need a family car. We'd keep it til it died so depreciation not a big issue

What kind of holidays do you like? Do you like driving holidays/road trips? I note you don't drive to commute - but on weekends do you like a nice drive?

alfagirl73 · 10/12/2016 20:48

Sorry - cross posts. If you like driving then go for it! If you're doing long road trips then a luxury car makes the world of difference.

Mari50 · 10/12/2016 20:53

Spend your money how you like, cars lose money from the get go, if you have the money to lose, then go for it and enjoy

caroldecker · 10/12/2016 21:03

Pretty If it similar in style and price to a Range Rover, get the Range Rover - much better than any competitor (and better value).

SleepFreeZone · 10/12/2016 21:17

DP is going to get that new 4x4 Jag that's come out and I am convinced it's going to get nicked from the driveway.

alfagirl73 · 10/12/2016 21:20

I agree with carol - if you're going for something "like" a Range Rover - then just get a Range Rover - they can't be beaten. It's what they do.

PrettySophisticated · 10/12/2016 21:24

That's why I didn't mention the car. The Range Rover might be the sensible option but I dont want a Range Rover and this is about the exact opposite of sensible Grin

Disco?

Musicinthe00ssucks · 10/12/2016 21:28

No way. 1. Because of how much cars depreciate and 2. Because you will very likely be a target for crime.

PigletJohn · 10/12/2016 21:28

If you've got a fancy car on your bucket list, you may as well get it while you have time to enjoy it.

Same as anything else.

MrsGsnow18 · 10/12/2016 21:30

If you really like it and want it then it's your call. If it meets your needs and you can afford it then there's nothing unreasonable about it.
However if you are worried about it looking too flash, will it make you feel self conscious when out and about?
I'm not really into cars, it would be last on my list of things to spend money on, but I do occasionally see some nice ones that I do appreciate.

Pluto30 · 10/12/2016 21:31

Range Rovers are shit boxes.

Unless you have a lot of money to throw around, and can afford to maintain an expensive car (because maintenance on these cars is the real kicker - as well as insurance, registration etc), don't bother. 99% of cars depreciate rapidly, and many are unreliable past the expiration of their warranty.

PigletJohn · 10/12/2016 21:31

sorry

Do you really want the car? I thought there would be some part in your OP or updates saying that it's a lot of money BUT you really, really want it and have been hankering after it for a while and are just getting cold feet because it's s luxury car. Do you want it because you can technically afford it or are you in love with it?

PhilODox · 10/12/2016 21:45

As long as you realise that anything spent on a car is wasted above its utility value, go for it (unless it's a classic, in which case, you'll get you money back, but doesn't sound as though that's the case).
If you enjoy it every time you use it, and it gives you pleasure, it's worth it.

thisismyfirsttime · 10/12/2016 21:46

*can technically afford it and think it's nice

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/12/2016 21:47

DP is going to get that new 4x4 Jag The F-Pace? They're lovely. Mmmmm.

WhooooAmI24601 · 10/12/2016 21:52

I bought myself my first 'lovely' car this year. Til now I've had practical but dull ones, this time I bought something I just loved. DH insisted it was a waste of money (I bought something a year old so didn't throw brand-new cash at it) but after driving it even he admits it's a great car, so much so that he borrows it when he can.

If you can afford something fun that you love, do it. Every time I get into my car I have a little 'yay' moment because I still just love it.

EatsShitAndLeaves · 10/12/2016 21:59

I love cars and spend a substantial amount on them.

I don't do it to be flashy, I genuinely don't give a toss what anyone else thinks.

I buy what I enjoy to drive and own and can afford.

If you can afford it, why not buy something that will bring you pleasure? Sounds like you've worked hard for it.

PrettySophisticated · 10/12/2016 22:01

Oh, rumbled, it's the f-pace, which I think is a bit cheaper than the Range Rover, although maybe not after extras etc.

DH has been hankering after a posh car for a while but I hadn't seen anything that made me want to spend the money, until now. The Jag seems a bit more subtle/less flash than its competitors to my eyes, whilst still being a luxury car iyswim.

SleepFreeZone · 10/12/2016 22:04

It's gonna get nicked lol 😜

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/12/2016 22:05

I'd nick it given half a chance!

EatsShitAndLeaves · 10/12/2016 22:10

I'm not really into 4x4's but I do think the F Pace looks nice and its had good reviews.

If it's what you want, buy it. I wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks.

You might want to keep it in the garage though Smile
