Christmas Drinks - help!

Less of an AIBU & perhaps more of a WWYD?

I have invited some friends over this evening for the first time (our DC are in nursery together) tonight and I really don't know what I'm gonna serve them food & drink wise!!

Our children are young so I dont want it to be a sit down formal three course meal kind of thing but neither do I want them to think I couldn't be bothered - in my text I'm sure I worded it something along the lines of a few drinks & some nibbles!? So what the bloody hell can I feed them?! Would it be frowned upon to do pizza & nibbles alongside?

Also, do I provide all the drink alcohol wise or expect them to bring some? Save me please!!

Oh nachos and chilli sounds good! Grated cheese, jalapeños, sour cream and guacamole on the side... get some beer and prossecco to go along with it and I'd be your new best friend!

Drinks and nibbles = whatever you drink yourself plus whatever you nibble yourself.

But you definitely provide it, whatever it is. Otherwise it's not much of an invitation tbh.

I'd go for the chilli idea too. It seems to be universally liked. If you're not confident in your recipe, you could find a well rated recipe online.

I'm not a fan of chilli and don't really consider it party food- bit heavy.

I would do a cheeseboard with some bread and crackers, some veggies and dips, crisps and nuts and something sweets for the adults. And maybe pizza or nuggets for the kids.

I'd put out some nice fillings and some nice rolls, soft and crusty.

You could have some hot fillings, sliced roast beef, some pulled pork and some cold fillings, cheese, ham, sliced chicken, sliced tomatoes and stick out some nibbles, small sausage rolls, cocktail sausages, you can serve those both warm, small samosa's,bowls of nice crisps and nuts, crudites and dips.

For something sweet I'd look in M&S they have some lovely mini desserts hot and cold one's.

With the alcohol I'd provide a few different things just incase they don't bring any with them, wine, beer,a couple of spirits and a few soft drinks.

Spoke with guests this morning, all are happy with my chilli option, in fact some guests said "oh you're spoiling us, we would of been happy with a packet of crisps!"

I can't stand chilli whereas I always think you can't go wrong with a selection of nibbles - sausages, M&S bits, that sort of stuff. That way people can eat as much or as little as they want. And it's easier to carry on a conversation! But if your guests are happy with chilli then go with that :)

We're having a few people over for new year and I'm planning on doing a slow cooker type meal. Easy, forget about it and then not much to sort out on the evening apart from some tapas style nibbles.
