Since last Friday I have been ill with a stomach virus which has pretty much caused me to be doubled up in pain anytime i eat. At its worst ive been sick with the pain. As ive recently started a new job and im on a six month probation i went back to work on Tuesday and have been avoiding food except for the odd piece of toast in the evening and thats been keepimg me up in pain. I have the works christmas meal tonight its all paid for but im still not right.

My problem is i dont want to be the dull person who pulls out at the last min i have my dp having a go at me for going and my mum telling me i should go or it will look bad i tried eating last night and within half an hour i was in agony to the point i was sick. I really dont have the energy to decide. Either way i feel like ibu.

Don't be ridiculous, you can't go to a meal if eating causes you that much pain

They know you've been ill, don't go to the meal

And TBH if it's not improving I'd go to the doctor

Do what you want. Sod your dp an mum. Your colleagues know you have been unwell, so I doubt they would be pissed off.

I have told her i dont feel well but i tend to try and grin and bear the pain as im only there 5hrs a day. I told her today i still cant eat and her response was "well you better start by tonight" shes one of those "ive never had a day sick in my life" types and was a bit funny about me not coming in monday. All my children have had the same bug but they bounce back so much quicker dont they?

Please go to the doctors and get checked out.

I had a stomach bug a few years ago that sounded very similar- I'd feel OK in the morning so have a bland breakfast and lunch, by afternoon I was in pain and then sick with it. The pain would finally subside sometime after I fell into an exhausted sleep- only to be repeated the next day.

After this went on for a week, I ended up in A and E, and then admitted to hospital, as the pain was so bad I could literally do nothing but writhe in pain.

Turns out it wasn't a bug, but my first Crohn's flare up.

Obviously I'm not saying that's what you have, but acute symptoms of a stomach bug don't usually last for a whole week. You need checking out just in case it is something like an ulcer that needs treating.

Don't go but make sure that you pay your share if money is due. Often if you have just paid a deposit the restaurant will still charge the full amount at Christmas and pretty shitty when colleagues have to pay.

This doesn't sound like a tummy bug to me. Please go and see your gp x

DoctorBeat · 09/12/2016 17:50

It may be just a stomach bug - I am the same as you, I have a very sensitive gut and every time I get noro (which I do frequently because of work unfortunately) I feel gripey and not right for a long time afterwards. I spent the night vomiting last Friday and I still get indigestion and reflux every time I eat. However if the symptoms go on much longer I would see your GP. Don't go to the meal, and just say you would rather avoid eating with people as you don't want to pass it on. I'm sure no one will mind if you put it like that!

Stingray2008 · 10/12/2016 09:01

Im going to get checked out if it still like this monday spent the whole of last night awake with the pain. I usually have a stomach of steel so this is really unlike me. All that seems to ease it a bit is a hotwater bottle. Ive been trying to find things to help but everything about stomach bugs talks about diarreah which i havent had.

Thanks again for making me see sence everyone.

I'm pulling out of mine for same reason, but mine is caused by a Crohn's disease flare. Eating at the moment is causing me to be incredibly ill, so makes no sense to do it for a Christmas meal.

Libitina · 10/12/2016 18:05

I think the xmas meal is the least of your worries atm. Pain like that is not normal and you need to seek medical advice as soon as possible. I'd consider ringing 111 if I were you.

Stingray2008 · 10/12/2016 18:05

My children have had it to the youngest ended up in hospital with dehydration and theybsaid it was just a bug. The pain is from my belly button to under my ribs radiating round my back. It hurts more at night for some reason and ive only really been sick with the pain.

Sounds like Campylobactor to me. The pain can be so bad that people have been operated on for suspected appendicitis on occasion.

SheldonsSpot · 10/12/2016 19:54

You need to see your GP, it could be a bug, gallstones, Crohn's...

RandomMess · 10/12/2016 19:59

It could be the after effects of Noro virus, we had tummy pains for weeks afterwards. However as it sounds extremely severe I would consider the possibility that it could be something else and get it checked out.

Buxtonstill · 10/12/2016 20:03

If it's round your back, likely it may be gallstones..
