AIBU to shut the door on chuggers?

Apologies if this has been done to death.

We've had a spate of chuggers knocking on recently and it's doing my head in. They tend to knock at 5ish, almost always when I'm giving DD her tea so I've had to drag her from the high chair to the door to answer. I know that of course I could just not answer, but I've done almost all my Christmas shopping online this year and we're getting a lot of packages. I don't want to miss them and have to go collect them.

I've no problem with walking past chuggers in the street with a 'no, thanks', but it's so much more intrusive at the door, and they don't seem to take the hint that it's a bad time, even with a food splattered baby on my hip. So AIBU to say 'no, thanks' and shut the door in their face?! I generally cut them off quickly and explain that I don't want to waste their time, but I am not going to donate to them/sign up because I don't agree in principle with door-to-door chugging, and it's nothing personal or against the charity. Which is fine, and doesn't take me long to say, but some of them are very persistent.

I normally don't think fast enough when asked "don't you care about [whatever]?"

But recently, I remembered something a friend told me she'd said to a chugger, so when asked don't you care about children? I replied, I hear they taste nice with orange sauce, and closed the door.

I think it was enough to make him pause long enough for me to close the door, as he was very close to pushing his way in.

The general consensus seems to be that there are two ways for dealing with them. Either be blunt, say "no thanks" and shut the door, or try to spin it out for as long as possible to waste their time.

I think the former is easier but the latter more enjoyable - however it does mean that you have to have the time to spare anyway of course.

One thing I'd love to do but never had the courage time to do is listen to the charity mugger's speech, then launch into an enthusiastic speech about a charity that is close to my own heart, to see how much money I can squeeze out of them. After all, there are plenty of good causes out there, and unlike them I wouldn't be taking a commission! Like I say, I'm always too scared busy to do this, but it's an idea...

3- dont even open the door!
if someone just rocks up uninvited trying to sell something or asking for money why would you even give them the time of day?
Why let complete strangers interrupt you and intrude into your life like that?

GENIUS. Next time I get stopped by a chugger I'm going to try to talk them into sponsoring me for my 10K, because otherwise they obviously don't care about people with cancer.

We've got a very large prominent sign on our door and it makes feck all difference. And for some reason, we get hoardes of JW's even though it's a rural village well off the beaten track.

Olivia I didn't mean your response I meant the passive aggressive chugger! Xmas Smile

snatchedpencil with regards to calling them chuggers short for charity muggers, there was a certain comedian who wanted to change their name from 'chuggers' to 'chunts' instead...

When I was in town today we had chuggers outside Caffe Nero and Jehovah's Witnesses just a few yards further up. If you dodged one set of pests you inadvertently directed yourself towards anotherAngry.

I was on the dole a few years ago and went for an interview with one of these companies, never heard of them prior to that. On the day I was to shadow on of their top chuggers and get the feel for it. fine no big deal.

I turn up to the office at 7am and I'm told we're heading over to a different town and I'll be given a lift. we get to the place were heading and it was one of the roughest estates I've ever seen, needles on the floor, gardens full of rubbish and kids running wild everywhere, men drinking beer at 8:30 in the morning! anyway off we go and start knocking on doors and she got about 8 sign ups that day, it gets to 5pm and I'm told that my experience day is over but they people are staying out until 8pm and there is no one to take me home. I was left stranded with no money about 50 miles from home. I had to call my dad who lived about 15 miles away to pick me up and take me home so he left work early and I was left by the people standing on my own on this housing estate. ever since then I have told them to do one.

Chugging is an appalling way of making a living and you're treated like shit by everyone (including your boss)
