WIBU to leave my son at home while we go on holiday?

My son is 12 and has just broken his wrist, it needed setting (just home from A&E (super tired)) but doesn't need surgery and is okay. He has a fracture clinic appointment on Friday (not today). We go on holiday the Monday after that... Will he be able to fly? It's to America and so quite a long flight. It will be fine won't it?? I hope so and I hope I'm just thinking hypothetically. If not, would it be really horrible to still go? I'd absolutely make sure he had an amazing time at home (my mum, who he is very close with, would be able to book lots of things up that were in the country) it's just I promised to take my dad (it was going to be my dad, me and DS) as my dad has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and we don't know how many more 'proper' memories we are going to have. He always wanted to go and I promised him, so it's not just a family holiday (where it would definitely be a no) I feel like this is such a hard situation. WIBU to do that? It's playing on my mind.

However, he will most likely be able to fly, yeah?

If he'll be spoiled rotten at home, and it sounds like he will Grin yes, go with it.

flooddy · 09/12/2016 03:15

Oh, he absolutely would!

Has he a cast on? Most airlines allow you to fly 24 hours after the cast is fitted because by then, any swelling is down.

He will be fine to go.

If the plaster has been on more than 24 hrs then normally they can fly. ( note not a doc or professional here). You might need a fit to fly letter. It all depends where the break is and if it is setting properly which I guess they will check at the clinic. I would have thought so as long as there are no complications / swelling etc.

He has a back slab, so swelling can go down and will get a proper one on Friday...

I thought they didn't set Childrens bones in a&e as it would be to painful! Did they know him out in a&e? Sorry being nosey. I think you need to try and take him. How does he feel about not going. And even if he was spoilt rotten at home he would be limited with a cast on. I hope he's better soon

So if he gets a cast on Friday, he will be fine. Tell them when they're fitting the case and they might want to give you a medical note certifying he's safe to fly. Also call the airline to check.

You also need to discuss the injury with your travel insurance company.

flooddy · 09/12/2016 04:06

Ah, that's good. I just looked on the website who we are flying with and it says 48 hours after, so should be okay then Smile I just hope swelling will have gone down, etc.

He had gas and air, that was it? I don't know if it's different for younger children or just depends on the child.

I've flown twice with a cast & crutches for a leg injury. The airline needed a doctors letter stating I was safe to fly which IIRC was shown at the flight desk with tickets etc. My first flight was 3 days after my injury, so I am sure he will be fine to fly. Though do make sure he is dosed up with plenty of painkillers, cocodomol etc as I found the cabin pressure or whatever really hurt my injury.

Have a great holiday

Similar happened with my son. They cut the cast and then taped it up to allow us to remove if it swelled in the air. They also provided a note to say he was fit to fly.

It wasn't a problem and we had a lovely holiday

Oh floody he must have been so proud, how very brave of him!! I have to be knocked out when they do anything!

beggingbehind · 10/12/2016 11:29

*You only just noticed mistake!

crashdoll · 10/12/2016 13:12

He'll be fine but do let them know as they will likely cut the cast. I agree that I'd get a fit to fly letter too, just in case.

Enjoy. :)

When my Nanna broke her wrist before her holiday they put a cast on that was cut and had Velcro to loosen it and tighten it so she could loosen it on the plane and then tighten it when the pressure went down.
