I totally realise this is all relative. I am just curious as to whether anyone gets theirs paid off in a reasonable amount of time.

I am sick to death of seeing it come out my pay, and have made some over payments in the past to clear it faster.

I earn a decent salary, but have had 2 years maternity leave so no payments made during those periods.

I graduated 11 years ago and still owe £5500 !

27 years, full scholarship to a US uni. Some of these figures are scaring me shitless!!

jmh740 · 08/12/2016 16:44

I graduated in 2004 I borrowed £7000 and I've repaid £2, I spent 8 years after graduating as a sahm and bow work as a ta and don't earn enough to repay anything at the minute.

caroldecker · 08/12/2016 16:48

The cost is meant to make you think twice - the cost to the public of the degree is unchanged, just now the individual is responsible (if they earn enough). If it ends crap degrees and closes crap unis, then everyone is better off.
Many large firms are offering to fund degrees alongside work experience if people want, and the evidence shows more poorer people are going to university. Scotland, which has kept tuition paid for out of taxes from the low waged has shown less poor people going to university.
Basically, government funded university places are a middle-class benefit paid for by the poor.

I graduated in 2006 with approx £14 of debt. I have possibly paid about £1-2k of that off, but haven't want enough to pay any more in the last 5 yrs.

lilyb84 · 08/12/2016 16:52

Jesus. Some of these figures are huge.

I graduated in 2015 with I think £16k in debt, working ever since until mat leave this year but was on fairly low retail salaries until the last 4-5 years. £11k left to pay - it's only in the last few years the numbers started going down, not up!

Tuktuktaker · 08/12/2016 16:52

Graduated 1978. Had a grant, Local Authority paid my tuition fees and a lot of my maintenance, on which my parents were means-tested. I was lucky.

lilyb84 · 08/12/2016 16:53

2005 that should have said!!

The levels of debt these days are scary.

I graduated 13 years ago and paid off my debt a couple of years ago. Was like a huge weight had been lifted.

LaurieMarlow · 08/12/2016 16:59

About £5500, graduated with 16k of debt in 2004, but didn't start paying back properly until 2009. Salary has risen quite high now, so should be paid off in the next few years.

littlesallyracket · 08/12/2016 17:02

Graduated in 1998 aged 22, so I had a combination of student loans and the last ever (very small - less than a grand for a whole year) student grants.

I was 30 and it was 2006 before I even started earning enough to pay it back, and I think it took about six years. For the last two years I was paying off more than the minimum amount.

That would have been amazing!

Sofabitch · 08/12/2016 21:38

Wish I hadn't looked !!! Still the rest of this year to go yet!

PossumInAPearTree · 08/12/2016 21:44

I graduated in 1997 and owe about 5k. Think it gets written off soon!

AndersArms · 08/12/2016 21:48

Graduated 2003. Started repaying 2005. Repaid in 2013. Was under £10k though.

Stargirl82 · 08/12/2016 21:48

12 years ago, 14k to go. Although for almost 4 years after getting degree I didn't earn enough to start paying back

I had a 4k loan and it took 5 years to pay off at about £60 per month. I've now been clear of it for 5 years. Interest rate was v low - it was one of those government ones in Scotland.

I lived at home and always worked so I didn't have much debt. I spent the loan on driving lessons. In fact, the interest rate was so low it was worth taking the loan and putting it in a high interest savings account (5%) if you didn't need the money thereby making a small profit!

elQuintoConyo · 08/12/2016 22:27

Graduated 1997 with £2,700 from Student Loans. I haven't paid anything towards it as I have had low-paid jobs (actually well-paid jobs for the countries I have been living in, but nowhere near the £2,180 or somesuch monthly wage repayment cut-off!).

Are the old-style loans supposed to disappear after 20 years? Or when you hit 50? Or when you retire? Bit confused, can you tell?!

StealthPolarBear · 08/12/2016 22:32

Lily did you mean you graduated in 2005?

StealthPolarBear · 08/12/2016 22:32

Sorry...

Sofabitch · 08/12/2016 22:33

I just worked out I'd have to earn 50k a year for my payments to match the interest!

These loans are not made to be paid back!

icy121 · 08/12/2016 22:34

Left in 08, loan about 11k, paid it off last year!

CostaBrava · 08/12/2016 22:37

13 years ago, 22k to go

throwingpebbles · 08/12/2016 22:38

Graduated in 2003, still got £5k to pay off (I did a further two years study, then two years on the job training) then since then a period of illness followed by two mat leaves and part time working means I am not making much of a dent (pay a little more than the interest each year)
