4 month old ds is not well; teething, upset tummy, nappy rash and a stinker of a cold Sad So anyway I have various medicines and not worried. Mil told me yesterday to not take him out anywhere. We stayed in for the day as I thought, well when I'm not well I don't fancy going out. My mum has said the same again today. I'm going stir crazy stuck in the house on day two and think surely a nice walk wrapped up in the pram will be fine or is it a thing that an ill baby shouldn't go outside?! I always think fresh air is good for kids but as I've been told by two people I'm now wondering if I'm wrong.

I think he will be fine & it will be very good for you. It's not anyone else's place to dictate to you what to do. They can offer to come over & babysit to let you get out of the house of they're so concerned (I'm guessing they're not that concerned). A bit of air will be good for your baby.

coffeecuppa · 07/12/2016 10:12

Wrap him up nice and warm and get out there for some fresh air. You'll both feel better for it Smile

Bringmewineandcake · 07/12/2016 10:12

Fresh air! Wrap up warm, leave the house. Better for both of you.

KayTee87 · 07/12/2016 10:14

That's what I thought qwertie, I was worried there was something I was missing about ill babies Blush I'm tired and need some fresh air, we're usually out at something everyday so very bored now. Wasn't going to take him to the class I usually do incase he passes it on, just a walk really.

OohhItsNotHoxton · 07/12/2016 10:14

You will both feel better for some fresh air. As long as he is wrapped up he will be fine imo

KayTee87 · 07/12/2016 10:15

So glad I was right Grin getting dressed right now!

I'm a DM and a MIL but I say wrap up warm and go out. It can't do any harm to your DS and you'll feel so much better.

BastardGoDarkly · 07/12/2016 10:16

Yes, go for a walk, it'll do him the world of good, and you of course.

PosiePaRumPaPaPumParker · 07/12/2016 10:17

Go out.... breath real air!!

PosiePaRumPaPaPumParker · 07/12/2016 10:17

breathe

BastardGoDarkly · 07/12/2016 10:17

When you get back, give him a nice bath, and leave his nappy off for as long as possible too, help his bum, poor thing :(

Pluto30 · 07/12/2016 10:17

Definitely ignore her advice.

Fresh air will make you both feel better. It'll be good for him! Cool air on his little face, but all bundled up warm. Smile

Batteriesallgone · 07/12/2016 10:18

I would say fresh air is great, lots of contact with people who may be carrying other illnesses is not. Last thing an ill 4m old needs is another thing to fight off. So go for a lovely walk but try and avoid chatting to people or enclosed spaces like shops and cafes with lots of people in.

KayTee87 · 07/12/2016 10:19

Batteries I will defo avoid other people as after two nights of this I look like shit and haven't showered this morning Grin

Grin know that feeling!

Also if you are breastfeeding breast milk expressed straight from source onto the rash can really help with nappy rash. And if your aim is good breastmilk squirted up the nose can help with blocked passages / sniffly nose. Hope he's better soon it's horrid when they are ill Sad

littlesallyracket · 07/12/2016 10:29

Only you know how ill he is, but generally speaking I think fresh air is quite good for colds - when I've got a cold my nose/sinuses always feel clearer if I go outdoors, and I can't see why it would be any different for babies. Don't know where you are, but the weather's really mild in most of the UK today and a bit of fresh air and sunshine will probably do both of you some good.

Qwertie · 07/12/2016 10:32

& get yourself some chocolate at the shop. You need a little present. It's crap looking after an ill child by yourself. Xmas Smile

BadKnee · 07/12/2016 10:32

Depends doesn't it? If he is really ill leave him where he is, warm and cosy. Free from traffic fumes. If he has a cold and is under the weather, fresh air and a walk good for both of you. Suspect MiL just trying to help - not "dictating"

KayTee87 · 07/12/2016 10:38

Good idea about the chocolate! there's only one shop within walking distance and very unlikely we'll come across a car at this time of day so no fumes to speak of.
I think dm and mil both just trying to be helpful and they said it with such certainty I thought I was mad considering taking him outside.

OP posts:
viviantaylor666 · 07/12/2016 10:48

A walk would be okay.

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2016 10:50

I think a walk will do you both the world of good.

Also, it's quite a mild day, so not like he'll be breathing in freezing cold air.

mygorgeousmilo · 07/12/2016 10:57

To quote my nan "there's no such thing as weather too cold for children, just parents that don't wrap them up properly". So my kids always have tonnes of thermals and layers etc. And no weather stops us from going out. They never get sick either and I think it's the regular fresh air. If they were genuinely very weak say after vomiting bug and couldn't get off the sofa, which is very rare, maybe twice between three kids, then out in the car with the windows open.

Madcats · 07/12/2016 10:59

I think this is one of those instances when the benefits of being out and about far outweigh the "stress" of being stuck at home feeling stir-crazy and resentful. It might save you picking up the bug too! Fresh air will do you both the world of good.

It is a lot milder round here so dress him in plenty of layers and check how warm DS is from time to time.

BTW DD invariably got nappy rash when teething. Metanium cream used to work the best for us.

Hope DS feels better soon.

frikadela01 · 07/12/2016 11:02

Definitely go out. My 5 month old is on the back end of a stinking cold and has been out every day. So much better for him than being cooped up. My mum and mil also suggested wrapping him up and sticking him in the back garden to nap. Apparently used to be a thing. We sat out for 2 hours yesterday. He slept the whole time and I just drank hot chocolate and played on my phone.
