14 months for two deaths is too short

I am not for a second saying that I couldn't see myself making the same error as the truck driver - but I'd expect to be sent down for much longer - surely 5 years at least. I know he obviously didn't mean to kill them, but they are no less dead.

But they will be no less dead if he goes to prison for longer either.... these cases are always so difficult because we have all made mistakes but then again his mistake has cost 2 lives (more if you include the family's). But he will no doubt punish himself for the rest of his life...
I'd hate to be a judge in these kind of cases!
Don't get me wrong, I am in no way downplaying what he has done, it's a horrible situation all round!

I dunno. He wasn't speeding, or texting, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There is no evidence that he was generally anything other than a generally careful driver who made a genuine mistake. I'm not sure that a longer sentence would achieve anything very much in this case. Sad

14 months is insulting imo.

I assume a judge sentences taking into account a persons remorse? He may be devestated and will punish himself far more than a jail sentence ever could. I don't disagree with you either though, 14 mths is very short. It's a sad situation all round if it's an innocent mistake.

There are currently proposals to introduce a life imprisonment sentence for dangerous or careless driving resulting in death. The outcome may be very different in future.

'Careless driving'? How on earth is that not dangerous driving I don't know.

Not sure there's much to be gained by a longer jail term. He should get a lifetime driving ban though. If he's been driving for 35 years with no incidents that suggests he was maybe a bit old for the job? Driving ability definitely declines with age - perhaps HGV drivers should retire in their 50's as do pilots and firemen.
