To pronounce "nihilist" this way?

PitilessYank · 05/12/2016 13:15

I say it like this:

"Nee-hilist"

But in polling my friends, 9/10 say "neye-hilist."

Which sounds more correct?

Sorbet is another tricky one. Its origins are Arabic, not French, so the final T should be pronounced - "sore bet" not "sore bay". It's basically the same word as sherbet.

Onceuponatime21 · 05/12/2016 18:36

What about hyperbole?? I've said it wrong all my life, because I cannot believe he right pronunciation is right?

(Gutted about sorbet!)

BratFarrarsPony · 05/12/2016 18:41

hy - per - boll - ee ?

winnybella · 05/12/2016 18:49

linoo yes, of course, but ifyoulikepinacolada seemed adamant that ee-go is the correct pronunciation, so I wondered.

Topseyt · 05/12/2016 18:54

Neye-ilist for me!

DH drives me round the bend with it though. He says NIL-HILL-IST!!!ShockShockConfusedConfused He never did master the English language, and yes, he is English.

Egg-oh would make me think that the speaker was about to start throwing eggs at someone they didn't agree with. Therefore it is ee-go.Wink

CaoNiMerrilyOnHigh · 05/12/2016 18:57

I was in a seminar with someone recently kept referring to what I presumed was a theorist named "Syke". No! It was how she pronounced "psyche"...

CaoNiMerrilyOnHigh · 05/12/2016 18:58

Also, how do people pronounce "synecdoche"? I make a point never to say it out loud. Is it "sinneck-doshee" or "-dockee"?

Topseyt · 05/12/2016 18:58

Oh, and DH also pronounces annihilate as a-nil-hill-ate.ShockConfused

I sometimes just give up!Angry

ClockBusCanada · 05/12/2016 19:00

Definitely -dockee . It's a play on words on my cousin's hometown Schenectady, NY.

ClockBusCanada · 05/12/2016 19:02

In the movie, that is.

Onceuponatime21 · 05/12/2016 19:34

I honestly thought it was hyper bowl....

Onceuponatime21 · 05/12/2016 19:35

Off to google synec (what is that?!)

WouldHave · 05/12/2016 19:44

I can honestly say I've never needed to discuss synecdoche in conversation so have never worried too much about how it's pronounced.

TheCompanyOfCats · 05/12/2016 21:01

Definitely hy-purr-bol-ee

I've always said synec-dochay but am prepared for that being wrong! Blush

TheCompanyOfCats · 05/12/2016 21:04

I used to have a teacher who used to say 'kes-tee-onaire' instead of 'kwestchonaire' (i.e. how everybody else I've ever known pronounces it). Thoughts?

BratFarrarsPony · 05/12/2016 21:06

well you don't say 'kestion' do you?

Hairykiri · 05/12/2016 21:18

Just looked up how to pronounce synecdoche - they're taking the piss surely? Confused

maggiethemagpie · 05/12/2016 21:35

My fave weirdly pronounced words are Segue (seg way)
And chipotle (chip -ot-le) which for years I thought was Chip-oh-tull. It took the subway adverts to sort that one out.

PitilessYank · 05/12/2016 21:49

I had a professor in medical school who used to pronounce "protein" like this: "pro-tee-inn." It really confused me, because it sounded like the way in which I would say the word "protean."

He was a native English speaker.

OP posts:
PitilessYank · 05/12/2016 21:51

How about this word:
Porsche.

I say it like "Portia", and my husband thinks that I am being pompous, and that it should be pronounced "Porsh."

OP posts:
SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 05/12/2016 21:52

It's German so it's supposed to be Portia, but Brits tend to say Porsh.

PitilessYank · 05/12/2016 21:57

Thank you, Sukey!

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 05/12/2016 21:59

I'm por-sha but the a is shorter like in German. More a mixture of a and e.

Madamfrog · 05/12/2016 22:07

It was a convention at prep school that if we wanted to get rid of something we used to hold it up and shout "quis?" and whoever wanted it would shout "ego" (pronounced eggo). If you're discussing the difference between the ego and the id, though, you'd be more likely to pronounce it eego.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 05/12/2016 22:13

Hairy yes that is a piss take, you should listen so some of the others they're hilarious Grin
