to think this was really wasteful?!

My DS has been diagnosed with CMPA, so we are using dairy-free formula. Initially, Aptamil Pepti was prescribed by the GP. He gave us 8 tons of it (enough to last 4 weeks). But DS was still reacting, so the dietician changed us to Neocate which is working wonders. Here is my AIBU:
Prescription bags say to return any unused medicines to the pharmacy yes?
So when I went to pick up the new prescription, I returned 6 tins of completely sealed, untouched, Aptamil Pepti to the pharmacy. The pharmacist said "well that will have to go in the bin anyway" and slung all six, sealed tins in the bin!
AIBU to think this was really wasteful?! I'm assuming the prescription formula is more expensive than standard formula, but even if it did cost the same (around £10 a tin), the pharmacist just threw £60 worth of NHS money into the bin Hmm

A woman in my local area offered some on a FB page for the same reason, people wit babies that weren't prescribed it were asking for the tubs, which I understand can be quite damaging to the baby, so I wouldn't advise that. Try the hospital, alternatively some one suggested the local animal shelter, apparently poorly animals love it and it helps them thrive

Hmm I suppose it does make sense that they can't re-prescribe, but it's still such a waste of money!
There's a sign right near the dispensary that says how much money is spent every year on unused prescriptions and how many hip replacements/cataract ops/community nurses etc that it could pay for Hmm and then £60+ just gets lobbed in a bin!

Eggy that sign is to stop people ordering things they don't need. Many people just tick everything on their repeat prescription without thinking if they need everything. If a doctor changes a medicine after it's been collected there isn’t anything you can do.

Yeah I found the same thing

6 sealed tins of nutramigen lipil 1

We got changed over to puramino

I rang the pharmacist and she encouraged me to give it to friends or sell it on because it would only go in the bin

I ended up listing it on eBay as no where around here took it

The person who bought it told me it went to an Italian orphanage but whether it did or not I don't really know.

I'm just happy it wasn't wasted

MyBreadIsEggy · 05/12/2016 11:52

But isn't selling it on illegal??

I don't know...never thought about it tbh

The pharmacist herself told to do it and there is loads of listings on eBay who clamp down on illegal selling

I know why they do this, its incase someone injects something into the tin. I thik its really good they do that and still refund your money. Unfortunately there are some sickos about and they obv feel the need.

Stef if a medicine isn't required or suitable you don't get a refund. Once it's left the pharmacy it cannot be returned it can only be disposed of.
