To not know if we need to see a Dr

My 3 year old has had a cough for about 3 weeks, a hacking cough that causes her to vomit fairly regularly. For the last 3/4 days she has had an on off fever and complained that her legs hurt. She's sleeping now and constantly rubbing her face and ears.
I too have the cough and fever and aches and also my face and head feel like they're going to explode. There is so much pressure......
So I think we need to make a gp appointment but I feel like a bad judge on this. Whenever I have made appointments for dd in the past I've been made to feel a nuisance and told there's nothing Dr can do its a virus and will go of its own accord.
So I feel dreadful and I'm sure dd does too but should we just put our big girl pants on and ride it out? Or should I get appointments in the morning?

(I know I should know this stuff but I feel rotten and need help adulting today)

I'm a GP and would more than happily see you with this history. It's 3 weeks not 3 hours (don't laugh, it's true). It could all be viral but with this history I'd phone in the morning.

Fettuccinecarbonara · 04/12/2016 20:29

Yes I would probably call 111 now if I'm honest.

When she's breathing is she grunting, breathing fast/irregularly or coughing lots in her sleep (does she vomit after coughing whilst asleep?)

A nasty bug for us can be very serious for a child. I'd be worried about bronchiolitis and/or flu.

Please get her checked out.

Ohb0llocks · 04/12/2016 20:30

Definitely get her checked out ASAP.

Go to the dr. Flowers it sounds awful! I had similar once and got some Night Nurse and it was amazingly good.

mumofone1234 · 04/12/2016 20:31

A cough for over three weeks needs to be checked out. The NHS campaign says so. Also because she has worsened in the last few days.

Smartleatherbag · 04/12/2016 20:31

The length of time your wee one has been ill would make it totally fair and good idea to see medic. Get well soon.

yellowfrog · 04/12/2016 20:31

I'd go see a GP. You could also take her to the chemist and ask the opinion of the pharmacist if you prefer

OonaLoona2 · 04/12/2016 20:31

Yikes.
She's not grunting or breathing fast but is coughing a lot and yes, quite often vomits when coughing. Strangely after vomiting the cough seems to be a bit better for a while then gradually builds up again if that makes sense.

I'd certainly suggest you go to the doctor, my husband had exactly the same for 3 weeks, coughing until he was sick etc. He's now on antibiotics for a week with a chest infection and was told he should have come in earlier. Hope she feels better soon.

Reality16 · 04/12/2016 20:35

I've been made to feel a nuisance and told there's nothing Dr can do its a virus and will go of its own accord. this really concerns me. You are not a nuisance for taking your child to find out if it's viral or if it's something that needs more attention. Never. If your GP has inferred that you are then you must bring that up at your practice. Part of their job is to be able to reassure.

I agree with the pp's about having your lo checked

OonaLoona2 · 04/12/2016 20:40

OK I'll get her checked in the morning. Or sooner if she gets any worse.
I didn't really mean to moan about our gp, they're very good but the last time I went with dd I was told that children can't always have antibiotics etc when I wasn't actually after antibiotics I just wanted her checked over (for a persistent cough funnily enough but she wasn't feeling as rotten as she is now and it was at least 6 months ago).

Definitely get her checked out, it probably is viral but it's gone on for a long time and sounds nasty. They might be able to give her an anti emetic or something

Hope she feels better soon Flowers

Flowers hope she's ok, keep us updated op
