Parking on pavement outside my house

carrielou2007 · 04/12/2016 17:29

I live in a semi next to a road that is for buses/pedestrians only. Everyone except me parks on the huuuuge pavements outside their houses, I park on the road (or my parking space around the back).

Next door is rented whilst owners are in NZ for 5 year contract and recently new neighbours park outside on the pavement and regularly in front on my house on the pavement which gives me the rage. I knock EVERY time if they do yet the turn the lights off and don't answer the door. Two weeks ago my postie left a parcel there and I did not get it for a week despite knocking every blessed day winter coat they'd ripped open the brown paper packaging then obs not sure what to do so chucked it over rear fence and it got soaked.

So tonight, they have yet again parked outside their house on the big pavement and mine as I was putting some stuff in the recycling bins outside I noticed and commented swore as the bloke got out of his car Blush to which he said 'I'll move it'. I waited the fir him to get back and yet again said please don't park on the pavement (about 30 ft) outside my house, the road is for everyone, the pavement is for people not cars. He then argued with me/fit shouty.

They do not speak much English so some could be lost in translation but he was shouty/cross I just said again do not park on the pavement outside my house, please park on the road, he commented something that I didn't understand.

Was feeling quite proud I had done non-British thing been direct and yet now am cowering in my house invade they key my car.

AIBU or should I ring the local police assistant roles tomorrow? One time I parked with two inches over the dropped kerb outside I got a £60 fine so parking on the pavement surely is a no brainer??

What's the issue with them parking outside your house?

Sorry I don't get what's giving you the rage.

ShadowMane · 04/12/2016 17:35

What's the problem??

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2016 17:37

I'm also unsure what's giving you the rage? I'm assuming you don't own the pavement? Or do you and they are parking on your land? Sorry, it's not clear.

wowfudge · 04/12/2016 17:38

It's the pavement. Cars should not be parked on the pavement. If I was the OP I'd be hacked off too.

Wolverbamptonwanderer · 04/12/2016 17:40

They're parking on the pavement, not the road, aren't they?

Well done for having a go but of course you can't call the police! Email the council, explain the problem and ask for a parking attendant to come round regularly to ticket people. It's illegal to park on the pavement

grannytomine · 04/12/2016 17:40

People shouldn't park on the pavement, not sure why people don't get that. I used to have a double buggy and regularly had to go in the middle of the road to get round cars on the pavement. YANBU

carrielou2007 · 04/12/2016 17:41

The pavement it about 30 foot with a bus stop, not just two wheels up on the kerb, their car is literally a foot away from my front door. Recently I knocked as I couldn't get the buggy out/past it for school run on my day off. Parking on the road is for everyon but the pavement is for people not cars!

Op you need to calm down. How does their parking directly affect you? Are they obstructing pedestrians? Is it just the rule breaking that winds you up - because that's the way you are coming across.

ClassmateHB · 04/12/2016 17:44

Everyone apart from you parks on the pavement? Around here there are a couple of roads where that is what is meant to happen (extra wide paths, used to have grass verge, they tarmaced it for cars as it was bus route and getting busier)

Are you sure you're not the one they're all saying is unreasonable as you aren't parking as you're meant to? If no one else is parking on the road it sounds a bit weird.....

OnTheNaughtyList · 04/12/2016 17:44

OP we really need a diagram or photo

Akire · 04/12/2016 17:46

I'm s wheelchair user and even 2 wheels on curb can cause huge problems. We can't drop down like a pushchair. So a car blocking the pavement could either mean trying wheel down road to find next drop curb or double looping for several roads to get around safely.

There's no need!

paddypants13 · 04/12/2016 17:47

Of course they shouldn't be parking on the pavement, you are quite right op. Ring the council and get them to send a warden. A few fines might get the message through.

Cosmicglitterpug · 04/12/2016 17:47

Take photos every time and email them to the council.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/12/2016 17:49

I think you are right OP, they should not be parking on the pavement.
Honestly not sure why you are getting a hard time.

Call the council, tell them and ask for the traffic warden. Nothing like a fine or two to make the point.

frikadela01 · 04/12/2016 17:52

Best bet would be to contact the council who can confirm whether they are allowed on the pavement. Some pavements bear me are extra wide to enable cars to park on them and plenty of room for pedestrians. If it isn't allowed inform the council everytime they park there, our council have a number you can call to report stuff like this. I complained everyday for 2 weeks about a van that kept parking in the pavement meaning I had to go into the very busy road with the pushchair. I can only guess the owner got tickets since the van is parked round the corner now.

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2016 17:53

Don't people normally park on the pavement to allow the road to remain wide enough for cars to get through?

TheHiphopopotamus · 04/12/2016 17:55

YANBU OP, they shouldn't be parking on the pavement, regardless of whether the car can fit on or not.

We used to have this near our old house. There was a wide pavement next to a busy main road, with double yellows all the way down it, and a bookies. Cars used to park on the pavement, forcing pedestrians into the road. Unfortunately, when I complained to the council, they didn't give a shit and so it just continued.

You can try your council as they may be more helpful than mine (but I doubt it). Failing that, pull your wheelie bin round to the front til they get the message as it might put them off. A lot of people wouldn't be arsed to get out and shift it.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/12/2016 17:56

No. Confused
Unless it's explicitly signed they can and/or should, which OP didn't mention.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/12/2016 17:56

Now that you've mentioned the crucial fact that they are so close to your door, causing an obstruction, your post makes sense.

Try the council, they may say it's a police matter, in which case contact them.

Wolverbamptonwanderer · 04/12/2016 17:57

I thought it was perfectly clear they were parking on the pavement. It was mentioned at least 3 times in the OP

AndShesGone · 04/12/2016 18:01

If other people are allowed to park on the pavement as you say everyone else does then so are they Confused

He's allowed to park outside your front door if he's parking in line with others

carrielou2007 · 04/12/2016 18:01

Not the best diagram Grin there are lots of wooden posts lining the extra large pavements to stop people parking there but as we have a bus stop outside there is a dropped kerb so next door can get on the pavement via this. Opposite 4 houses park on the pavement as they have removed one of the wooden posts so they can gain access. I am partially sighted and did not see the hole from the removed post, front wheel of dc3 buggy dropped down it and we both went arse over tit toplling over. I rang the local police community officers then who came out and spoke to all the neighbours but as it was a one off could take no further action. I then took a pic everyday fir next two months (was on mat leave then) sent but no further action taken. I can't see very well but am able to move out of the way, what about someone in a wheelchair, how would they be able to get past?

Right so it the fact they are blocking access?

Fwiw I wasn't giving you a hard time I just didn't get it. People park on pavements here. But there is plenty of room room get round and no body minds. People park outside my house and I just get on with it. If it's stopping people being able to get by then it's annoying.

I would call the council not the police. Unless that's what you have been advised by the council or police.

HairyScaryMonster · 04/12/2016 18:52

It would be the police you call if they're causing an obstruction.

OnTheNaughtyList · 04/12/2016 19:05

Oh good a diagram! I see what you mean that's so annoying. Are they driving on the buses only part of the road to get there? Take photos and report to your local council!
