I am going to get probably lynched for being too stupid to understand something so simple but I'm really confused over what cover I need.

I live in a housing association flat so do I just need contents?

then if we were to ever need to claim what would I need, would I need receipts for everything?

these things should really be taught in schools :(

As a renter you would only need contents yes, as the building is owned by the ll so they are responsible for insuring it.

Generally, the person who owns the structure of the property insures it. You're just renting, so that's not you.

If you want to insure, what you need to insure is the bits that belong to you inside the property - so contents. Certain expensive items need to be disclosed separately, depending on the insurer - things like laptops and jewellery.

If you have any big pieces like wedding rings, engagement rings, family heirlooms etc, it would be a good idea to get those valued. With big purchases, yes, always hold onto the receipts.

You only need contents insurance. Make sure to separately list all the expensive items you have such as heirlooms or the latest tech gadgets. It's rare for a receipt to be needed, especially considering that in the event of a terrible house fire for example, your receipts would go up in smoke along with everything else.
Remember when you are valuing your contents, think how much it would cost to replace EVERYTHING. Toothbrushes, knickers, hell, even your garlic crusher or egg cups. It's astounding how many small things you have that you don't think about the cost of. My 3 bed flat is insured for quite a lot of money to replace my crap should the worst happen.
