To want to go and volunteer on Xmas day?

Im 27. Christmas day will be me my mum, dad and brother who is 33.

We get up early and do presents, have lunch and Xmas is really over for us by 1/2pm. We then sit and watch the same old Christmas shite or do our own thing.

Im thinking about going to volunteer at a soup kitchen or the like on Christmas day. Mum is pissed off because she thinks its a time we should spend together.

AIBU for wanting to do it? It just seems wrong when there are people out there who will have nothing all day

I can assure you than in most place Xmas day will be completely inundated with volunteers. I run a volunteer centre and we have had so many people asking . Most shelters etc will have organised Christmas day months in advance! You're not at all selfish for wanting to do it though. I worked in a day centre for a few years and did two Christmas days- they were so good. Really got to talk to the people I was seeing on 'normal' days and find out a lot more about them.

My PIL have done this for the past 2-3 years at the local Help the Aged.

So we spend Xmas Eve at theirs or meet up in the afternoon for late lunch etc.

YANBU to want to do it - but I'd make some enquiries quickly as you might be too late. All the volunteer places round here are fully booked with volunteers, and have been for a few months. (FYI, what they desperately need is volunteers all year round, not just at Christmas).

In previous threads, people have said that Christmas Day is really popular for volunteering and you have to get your name down months in advance to have chance of being chosen.

How about thinking of something to do as a family on Christmas Day afternoon (whether that's board games, a bracing walk or something more exciting that a more imaginative poster can probably think of) - and then make it your New Year's Resolution to take on some voluntary work in the new year?

YANBU, please can you volunteer to go into work instead of me on Christmas day night Xmas Grin

ImNotDancing · 02/12/2016 19:16

Honestly, I'd go the days surrounding christmas.
There'll be loads of volunteers on the actual day but they'll probably struggle in the days surrounding

We have a list of December and January volunteering - as well as the all year round stuff - so it's there before and after.

Yes yabu. Firstly, lots of people volunteer on Christmas day. Surely if you volunteer another day, it would be better for everyone. The people you'd be helping plus you would be making your mother happy by having Christmas day with her.
